Jesus Is Taken to Pilate
(Mark 15.1Luke 23.1Luke 2John 18.28-32)1 Early in the morning all the chief priests and the elders made their plans against Jesus to put him to death. 2 They put him in chains, led him off, and handed him over to Pilate, the Roman governor.
The Death of Judas
(Acts 1.18Acts 19)3 When Judas, the traitor, learned that Jesus had been condemned, he repented and took back the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders. 4 “I have sinned by betraying an innocent man to death!” he said.
“What do we care about that?” they answered. “That is your business!”
5 Judas threw the coins down in the Temple and left; then he went off and hanged himself.
6 The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “This is blood money, and it is against our Law to put it in the Temple treasury.” 7 After reaching an agreement about it, they used the money to buy Potter's Field, as a cemetery for foreigners. 8 That is why that field is called “Field of Blood” to this very day.
9 Then what the prophet Jeremiah had said came true: “They took the thirty silver coins, the amount the people of Israel had agreed to pay for him, 10 and used the money to buy the potter's field, as the Lord had commanded me.”
Pilate Questions Jesus
(Mark 15.2-5Luke 23.3-5John 18.33-38)11 Jesus stood before the Roman governor, who questioned him. “Are you the king of the Jews?” he asked.
“So you say,” answered Jesus. 12 But he said nothing in response to the accusations of the chief priests and elders.
13 So Pilate said to him, “Don't you hear all these things they accuse you of?”
14 But Jesus refused to answer a single word, with the result that the Governor was greatly surprised.
Jesus Is Sentenced to Death
(Mark 15.6-15Luke 23.13-25John 18.39—19.16)15 At every Passover Festival the Roman governor was in the habit of setting free any one prisoner the crowd asked for. 16 At that time there was a well-known prisoner named Jesus Barabbas. 17 So when the crowd gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to set free for you? Jesus Barabbas or Jesus called the Messiah?” 18 He knew very well that the Jewish authorities had handed Jesus over to him because they were jealous.
19 While Pilate was sitting in the judgment hall, his wife sent him a message: “Have nothing to do with that innocent man, because in a dream last night I suffered much on account of him.”
20 The chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask Pilate to set Barabbas free and have Jesus put to death. 21 But Pilate asked the crowd, “Which one of these two do you want me to set free for you?”
“Barabbas!” they answered.
22 “What, then, shall I do with Jesus called the Messiah?” Pilate asked them.
“Crucify him!” they all answered.
23 But Pilate asked, “What crime has he committed?”
Then they started shouting at the top of their voices: “Crucify him!”
24 When Pilate saw that it was no use to go on, but that a riot might break out, he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said, “I am not responsible for the death of this man! This is your doing!”
25 The whole crowd answered, “Let the responsibility for his death fall on us and on our children!”
26 Then Pilate set Barabbas free for them; and after he had Jesus whipped, he handed him over to be crucified.
The Soldiers Make Fun of Jesus
(Mark 15.16-20John 19.2John 3)27 Then Pilate's soldiers took Jesus into the governor's palace, and the whole company gathered around him. 28 They stripped off his clothes and put a scarlet robe on him. 29 Then they made a crown out of thorny branches and placed it on his head, and put a stick in his right hand; then they knelt before him and made fun of him. “Long live the King of the Jews!” they said. 30 They spat on him, and took the stick and hit him over the head. 31 When they had finished making fun of him, they took the robe off and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.
Jesus Is Crucified
(Mark 15.21-32Luke 23.26-43John 19.17-27)32 As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene named Simon, and the soldiers forced him to carry Jesus' cross. 33 They came to a place called Golgotha, which means, “The Place of the Skull.” 34 There they offered Jesus wine mixed with a bitter substance; but after tasting it, he would not drink it.
35 They crucified him and then divided his clothes among them by throwing dice. 36 After that they sat there and watched him. 37 Above his head they put the written notice of the accusation against him: “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” 38 Then they crucified two bandits with Jesus, one on his right and the other on his left.
39 People passing by shook their heads and hurled insults at Jesus: 40 “You were going to tear down the Temple and build it back up in three days! Save yourself if you are God's Son! Come on down from the cross!”
41 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the Law and the elders made fun of him: 42 “He saved others, but he cannot save himself! Isn't he the king of Israel? If he will come down off the cross now, we will believe in him! 43 He trusts in God and claims to be God's Son. Well, then, let us see if God wants to save him now!”
44 Even the bandits who had been crucified with him insulted him in the same way.
The Death of Jesus
(Mark 15.33-41Luke 23.44-49John 19.28-30)45 At noon the whole country was covered with darkness, which lasted for three hours. 46 At about three o'clock Jesus cried out with a loud shout, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why did you abandon me?”
47 Some of the people standing there heard him and said, “He is calling for Elijah!” 48 One of them ran up at once, took a sponge, soaked it in cheap wine, put it on the end of a stick, and tried to make him drink it.
49 But the others said, “Wait, let us see if Elijah is coming to save him!”
50 Jesus again gave a loud cry and breathed his last.
51 Then the curtain hanging in the Temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split apart, 52 the graves broke open, and many of God's people who had died were raised to life. 53 They left the graves, and after Jesus rose from death, they went into the Holy City, where many people saw them.
54 When the army officer and the soldiers with him who were watching Jesus saw the earthquake and everything else that happened, they were terrified and said, “He really was the Son of God!”
55 There were many women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee and helped him. 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the wife of Zebedee.
The Burial of Jesus
(Mark 15.42-47Luke 23.50-56John 19.38-42)57 When it was evening, a rich man from Arimathea arrived; his name was Joseph, and he also was a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went into the presence of Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate gave orders for the body to be given to Joseph. 59 So Joseph took it, wrapped it in a new linen sheet, 60 and placed it in his own tomb, which he had just recently dug out of solid rock. Then he rolled a large stone across the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there, facing the tomb.
The Guard at the Tomb
62 The next day, which was a Sabbath, the chief priests and the Pharisees met with Pilate 63 and said, “Sir, we remember that while that liar was still alive he said, ‘I will be raised to life three days later.’ 64 Give orders, then, for his tomb to be carefully guarded until the third day, so that his disciples will not be able to go and steal the body, and then tell the people that he was raised from death. This last lie would be even worse than the first one.”
65 “Take a guard,” Pilate told them; “go and make the tomb as secure as you can.”
66 So they left and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and leaving the guard on watch.
Jesús ante Pilato
(Mc 15.1Lc 23.1-2Jn 18.28-32)1 Cuando llegó la mañana, todos los principales sacerdotes y los ancianos del pueblo se confabularon contra Jesús, para condenarlo a muerte.
2 Lo ataron y se lo llevaron para entregárselo a Poncio Pilato, el gobernador.
Muerte de Judas
3 Cuando Judas, el que lo había traicionado, vio que Jesús había sido condenado, se arrepintió y devolvió las treinta monedas de plata a los principales sacerdotes y a los ancianos.
4 Les dijo: «He pecado al entregar sangre inocente.» Pero ellos le dijeron: «¿A nosotros qué nos importa? ¡Allá tú!»
5 Entonces Judas arrojó en el templo las monedas de plata, y después de eso salió y se ahorcó.
6 Los principales sacerdotes tomaron las monedas y dijeron: «No está bien echarlas en el tesoro de las ofrendas, porque es el precio de sangre derramada.»
7 Y después de ponerse de acuerdo, compraron con ellas el campo del alfarero, para sepultar allí a los extranjeros.
8 Por eso hasta el día de hoy aquel campo se llama «Campo de sangre».
9 Así se cumplió lo dicho por el profeta Jeremías: «Y tomaron las treinta monedas de plata, que es el precio estimado por los hijos de Israel,
10 y las usaron para comprar el campo del alfarero, como me ordenó el Señor.»
Pilato interroga a Jesús
(Mc 15.2-5Lc 23.3-5Jn 18.33-38)11 Jesús estaba en pie ante el gobernador, y este le preguntó: «¿Eres tú el Rey de los judíos?» Jesús le respondió: «Tú lo dices.»
12 Pero ante las acusaciones de los principales sacerdotes y de los ancianos no respondió nada.
13 Entonces Pilato le preguntó: «¿No oyes de cuántas cosas te acusan?»
14 Pero Jesús no le respondió ni una palabra, de tal manera que el gobernador se quedó muy asombrado.
Jesús es sentenciado a muerte
(Mc 15.6-20Lc 23.13-25Jn 18.38—19.16)15 Ahora bien, en el día de la fiesta el gobernador acostumbraba poner en libertad a un preso, el que el pueblo quisiera.
16 En aquel momento tenían un preso muy famoso, llamado Barrabás.
17 Pilato se reunió con ellos y les preguntó: «¿A quién quieren que les suelte: a Barrabás, o a Jesús, al que llaman el Cristo?»
18 Y es que Pilato sabía que ellos lo habían entregado por envidia.
19 Mientras él estaba sentado en el tribunal, su mujer mandó a decirle: «No tengas nada que ver con ese justo, pues por causa de él hoy he tenido un sueño terrible.»
20 Pero los principales sacerdotes y los ancianos persuadieron a la multitud de que pidieran a Barrabás, y que mataran a Jesús.
21 El gobernador les preguntó: «¿A cuál de los dos quieren que les suelte?» Y ellos dijeron: «¡A Barrabás!»
22 Pilato les preguntó: «¿Qué debo hacer entonces con Jesús, al que llaman el Cristo?» Y todos le dijeron: «¡Que lo crucifiquen!»
23 Y el gobernador les dijo: «Pero ¿qué mal ha hecho?» Pero ellos gritaban aún más, y decían: «¡Que lo crucifiquen!»
24 Al ver Pilato que no conseguía nada, sino que se armaba más alboroto, tomó agua, se lavó las manos en presencia del pueblo, y dijo: «Allá ustedes. Yo me declaro inocente de la muerte de este justo.»
25 Y todo el pueblo respondió: «¡Que recaiga su muerte sobre nosotros y sobre nuestros hijos!»
26 Entonces les soltó a Barrabás, y luego de azotar a Jesús lo entregó para que lo crucificaran.
27 Los soldados del gobernador llevaron a Jesús al pretorio, y alrededor de él reunieron a toda la compañía;
28 luego lo desnudaron, le echaron encima un manto escarlata;
29 sobre la cabeza le pusieron una corona tejida de espinas, y en la mano derecha le pusieron una caña; entonces se arrodillaron delante de él, y burlonamente le decían: «¡Salve, Rey de los judíos!»
30 Además, le escupían y con una caña le golpeaban la cabeza.
31 Después de burlarse de él, le quitaron el manto, le pusieron sus vestidos, y lo llevaron para crucificarlo.
Crucifixión y muerte de Jesús
(Mc 15.21-41Lc 23.26-49Jn 19.17-30)32 Al salir de allí, se encontraron con un hombre de Cirene que se llamaba Simón, y lo obligaron a llevar la cruz.
33 Llegaron a un lugar llamado Gólgota, que significa «Lugar de la Calavera»,
34 y allí le dieron a beber vinagre mezclado con hiel; pero Jesús, después de haberlo probado, no quiso beberlo.
35 Después de que lo crucificaron, echaron suertes para repartirse sus vestidos, con lo que se cumplió lo dicho por el profeta: «Se repartieron mis vestidos, y sobre mi ropa echaron suertes.»
36 Luego se sentaron a custodiarlo.
37 Sobre su cabeza pusieron su causa escrita: «ESTE ES JESÚS, EL REY DE LOS JUDÍOS.»
38 Junto a él crucificaron también a dos ladrones, uno a la derecha y otro a la izquierda.
39 Los que pasaban lo insultaban, y mientras meneaban la cabeza
40 decían: «Tú, que derribas el templo y en tres días lo reedificas, sálvate a ti mismo. Si eres Hijo de Dios, desciende de la cruz.»
41 Del mismo modo, también se burlaban de él los principales sacerdotes, los escribas, los fariseos y los ancianos. Decían:
42 «Salvó a otros, pero a sí mismo no puede salvarse. Si es el Rey de Israel, que baje ahora de la cruz, y creeremos en él.
43 Ya que él confió en Dios, pues que Dios lo libre ahora, si lo quiere. Porque él ha dicho: “Soy Hijo de Dios.”»
44 Y también lo insultaban los ladrones que estaban crucificados con él.
45 Desde el mediodía y hasta las tres de la tarde hubo tinieblas sobre toda la tierra.
46 Cerca de las tres de la tarde, Jesús clamó a gran voz. Decía: «Elí, Elí, ¿lema sabactani?», es decir, «Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has desamparado?»
47 Algunos de los que estaban allí, decían al oírlo: «Está llamando a Elías.»
48 Al instante, uno de ellos corrió y tomó una esponja, la empapó en vinagre y, poniéndola en una caña, le dio a beber.
49 Los otros decían: «Deja, veamos si Elías viene a librarlo.»
50 Pero Jesús, después de clamar nuevamente a gran voz, entregó el espíritu.
51 En ese momento el velo del templo se rasgó en dos, de arriba abajo; la tierra tembló, las rocas se partieron,
52 los sepulcros se abrieron, y muchos cuerpos de santos, que ya habían muerto, volvieron a vivir.
53 Después de la resurrección de Jesús, estos salieron de sus sepulcros y fueron a la santa ciudad, donde se aparecieron a muchos.
54 Al ver el terremoto y las cosas que habían sucedido, el centurión y los que estaban con él custodiando a Jesús se llenaron de miedo, y dijeron: «¡En verdad, este era Hijo de Dios!»
55 Muchas mujeres, que desde Galilea habían seguido a Jesús para servirlo, estaban allí mirando de lejos.
56 Entre ellas estaban María Magdalena, María la madre de Jacobo y de José, y la madre de los hijos de Zebedeo.
Jesús es sepultado
(Mc 15.42-47Lc 23.50-56Jn 19.38-42)57 Cuando llegó la noche, un hombre rico de Arimatea que se llamaba José, y que también había sido discípulo de Jesús,
58 fue a hablar con Pilato para pedirle el cuerpo de Jesús. Y Pilato ordenó que se lo entregaran.
59 José tomó el cuerpo, lo envolvió en una sábana limpia,
60 y lo puso en su sepulcro nuevo, que había sido cavado en una peña. Después de hacer rodar una gran piedra a la entrada del sepulcro, se fue.
61 María Magdalena y la otra María se quedaron sentadas delante del sepulcro.
La guardia ante la tumba
62 Al día siguiente, que es el día después de la preparación, los principales sacerdotes y los fariseos se reunieron ante Pilato
63 y le dijeron: «Señor, nos acordamos que, cuando aún vivía, aquel engañador dijo: “Después de tres días resucitaré.”
64 Por lo tanto, manda asegurar el sepulcro hasta el tercer día; no sea que sus discípulos vayan de noche y se lleven el cuerpo, y luego digan al pueblo: “¡Resucitó de entre los muertos!” Porque entonces el último engaño sería peor que el primero.»
65 Y Pilato les dijo: «Ahí tienen una guardia. Vayan y aseguren el sepulcro como sepan hacerlo.»
66 Entonces ellos fueron y aseguraron el sepulcro, sellando la piedra y poniendo la guardia.
