Gifts for Building the Temple
1 King David announced to the whole assembly: “My son Solomon is the one whom God has chosen, but he is still young and lacks experience. The work to be done is tremendous, because this is not a palace for people but a temple for the Lord God. 2 I have made every effort to prepare materials for the Temple—gold, silver, bronze, iron, timber, precious stones and gems, stones for mosaics, and quantities of marble. 3 Over and above all this that I have provided, I have given silver and gold from my personal property because of my love for God's Temple. 4 I have given 115 tons of the finest gold and 265 tons of pure silver for decorating the walls of the Temple 5 and for all the objects which the skilled workers are to make. Now who else is willing to give a generous offering to the Lord?”
6 Then the heads of the clans, the officials of the tribes, the commanders of the army, and the administrators of the royal property volunteered to give 7 the following for the work on the Temple: 190 tons of gold, 380 tons of silver, 675 tons of bronze, and 3,750 tons of iron. 8 Those who had precious stones gave them to the Temple treasury, which was administered by Jehiel of the Levite clan of Gershon. 9 The people had given willingly to the Lord, and they were happy that so much had been given. King David also was extremely happy.
David Praises God
10 There in front of the whole assembly King David praised the Lord. He said, “Lord God of our ancestor Jacob, may you be praised forever and ever! 11 You are great and powerful, glorious, splendid, and majestic. Everything in heaven and earth is yours, and you are king, supreme ruler over all. 12 All riches and wealth come from you; you rule everything by your strength and power; and you are able to make anyone great and strong. 13 Now, our God, we give you thanks, and we praise your glorious name.
14 “Yet my people and I cannot really give you anything, because everything is a gift from you, and we have only given back what is yours already. 15 You know, O Lord, that we pass through life like exiles and strangers, as our ancestors did. Our days are like a passing shadow, and we cannot escape death. 16 O Lord, our God, we have brought together all this wealth to build a temple to honor your holy name, but it all came from you and all belongs to you. 17 I know that you test everyone's heart and are pleased with people of integrity. In honesty and sincerity I have willingly given all this to you, and I have seen how your people who are gathered here have been happy to bring offerings to you. 18 Lord God of our ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, keep such devotion forever strong in your people's hearts and keep them always faithful to you. 19 Give my son Solomon a wholehearted desire to obey everything that you command and to build the Temple for which I have made these preparations.”
20 Then David commanded the people, “Praise the Lord your God!” And the whole assembly praised the Lord, the God of their ancestors, and they bowed low and gave honor to the Lord and also to the king.
21 The following day they killed animals as sacrifices, dedicating them to the Lord, and then gave them to the people to eat. In addition, they sacrificed a thousand bulls, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs, which they burned whole on the altar. They also brought the offerings of wine. 22 So that day they were very happy as they ate and drank in the presence of the Lord.
For a second time they proclaimed Solomon king. In the name of the Lord they anointed him as their ruler and Zadok as priest. 23 So Solomon succeeded his father David on the throne which the Lord had established. He was a successful king, and the whole nation of Israel obeyed him. 24 All the officials and soldiers, and even all of David's other sons, promised to be loyal to Solomon as king. 25 The Lord made the whole nation stand in awe of Solomon, and he made him more glorious than any other king that had ruled Israel.
Summary of David's Reign
26 David son of Jesse ruled over all Israel 27 for forty years. He ruled in Hebron for seven years and in Jerusalem for thirty-three. 28 He died at a ripe old age, wealthy and respected, and his son Solomon succeeded him as king. 29 The history of King David from beginning to end is recorded in the records of the three prophets, Samuel, Nathan, and Gad. 30 The records tell how he ruled, how powerful he was, and all the things that happened to him, to Israel, and to the surrounding kingdoms.
1 El rey David le dijo a toda la asamblea:
«Dios ha escogido a mi hijo Salomón, pero él es todavía un niño tierno de edad, y la obra es demasiado grande. Esta casa no es para un hombre, sino para Dios el Señor.
2 Con todas mis fuerzas yo he preparado todo para la casa de mi Dios: oro para los objetos de oro, plata para los objetos de plata, bronce para los de bronce, hierro para los de hierro, y madera para los de madera; además, piedras de ónice, piedras preciosas, piedras negras, piedras de diversos colores, toda clase de piedras preciosas, y piedras de mármol en abundancia.
3 Además de todo lo que he preparado para la casa del santuario, es tan grande mi afecto por la casa de mi Dios que, en mi tesoro particular, tengo guardado oro y plata, y lo voy a dar para la casa de mi Dios:
4 cien mil kilos de oro, de oro de Ofir, y treinta mil kilos de plata refinada para recubrir las paredes de los edificios;
5 oro para los objetos de oro, y plata para los objetos de plata y para toda obra que deban hacer los artífices. ¿Quién más quiere presentar hoy una ofrenda voluntaria al Señor?»
6 Los jefes de familia y los jefes de las tribus israelitas, y los jefes de millares y de centenas, lo mismo que los administradores de las propiedades del rey, presentaron sus ofrendas voluntarias.
7 Para el servicio de la casa de Dios dieron ciento sesenta y cinco mil kilos y diez mil monedas de oro, trescientos treinta mil kilos de plata, seiscientos mil kilos de bronce, y tres millones trescientos mil kilos de hierro.
8 Todo el que tenía piedras preciosas las puso en las manos de Yejiel el guersonita para el tesoro de la casa del Señor.
9 El pueblo estaba feliz de haber contribuido voluntariamente, pues todo lo que ofrecieron al Señor lo dieron de corazón y de manera voluntaria.
10 El rey David se alegró mucho y bendijo al Señor delante de toda la congregación. Dijo:
«Bendito seas, Señor y Padre nuestro, Dios de Israel, desde el siglo y hasta el siglo.
11 Tuya es, Señor, la magnificencia y el poder, la gloria, la victoria y el honor; pues tuyas son todas las cosas que están en los cielos y en la tierra. Tuyo es, Señor, el reino. ¡Tú eres excelso sobre todas las cosas!
12 De ti proceden las riquezas y la gloria. Tú dominas sobre todo. En tu mano están la fuerza y el poder, y en tu mano también está el engrandecer y el dar poder a todos.
13 Por eso ahora, Dios nuestro, alabamos y loamos tu glorioso nombre.
14 »A decir verdad, ¿quién soy yo, y quién es mi pueblo, para poder ofrecerte todo esto, y de manera voluntaria? Todo es tuyo, y lo que ahora te damos lo hemos recibido de tus manos.
15 Nosotros, ante ti, somos unos extranjeros y advenedizos, como lo fueron todos nuestros padres: ¡nuestros días sobre la tierra son como una sombra pasajera!
16 Señor y Dios nuestro, toda esta abundancia que hemos preparado para edificar casa a tu santo nombre, procede de tu mano, y es todo tuyo.
17 Dios mío, yo sé que tú escudriñas los corazones, y que la rectitud te agrada. Por eso yo, con rectitud de mi corazón, te he ofrecido todo esto de manera voluntaria, y con alegría he visto que tu pueblo, reunido aquí y ahora, te ha ofrendado con espontaneidad.
18 »Señor, Dios de nuestros padres Abrahán, Isaac e Israel, conserva siempre esta voluntad de corazón de tu pueblo, y encamina a ti su corazón.
19 Dale a mi hijo Salomón un corazón perfecto, para que cumpla tus mandamientos, tus testimonios y tus estatutos, y para que te edifique la casa y todas las cosas, para las cuales yo he hecho estos preparativos.»
20 Después de esto, David dijo a toda la congregación:
«Bendigan al Señor su Dios.»
Entonces toda la congregación bendijo al Señor, Dios de sus padres, y se inclinaron y adoraron delante del Señor y del rey.
21 Sacrificaron víctimas al Señor, y al día siguiente le ofrecieron holocaustos: mil becerros, mil carneros, mil corderos con sus libaciones, y muchos sacrificios de parte de todo Israel.
22 Y ese día comieron y bebieron delante del Señor con gran alegría, y por segunda vez reconocieron como rey a Salomón hijo de David, y ante el Señor lo ungieron como príncipe, y a Sadoc lo ungieron como sacerdote.
23 Salomón ocupó el trono del Señor en lugar de David su padre, y fue prosperado, y todo Israel le juró obediencia.
24 Todos los jefes y poderosos, y todos los hijos del rey David, rindieron homenaje al rey Salomón,
25 y el Señor lo engrandeció en extremo ante todo Israel, y fue tal la gloria de su reino que ningún rey la tuvo antes de él en Israel.
Muerte de David
(1 R 2.10-12)26 David hijo de Yesé reinó sobre todo Israel
27 cuarenta años. Siete años reinó en Hebrón, y treinta y tres reinó en Jerusalén.
28 Murió cuando ya era anciano y entrado en años, rodeado de riquezas y de gloria; y en su lugar reinó su hijo Salomón.
29 Los hechos del rey David, tanto los primeros como los últimos, están escritos en el libro de las crónicas del vidente Samuel, en las crónicas del profeta Natán, y en las crónicas del vidente Gad,
30 con todo lo relativo a su reinado y su poder, y con todo lo que le aconteció a él, y a Israel y a todos los reinos de aquellas tierras.
