The Question about the Sabbath
(Matthew 12.1-8Mark 2.23-28)1 Jesus was walking through some wheat fields on a Sabbath. His disciples began to pick the heads of wheat, rub them in their hands, and eat the grain. 2 Some Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what our Law says you cannot do on the Sabbath?”
3 Jesus answered them, “Haven't you read what David did when he and his men were hungry? 4 He went into the house of God, took the bread offered to God, ate it, and gave it also to his men. Yet it is against our Law for anyone except the priests to eat that bread.”
5 And Jesus concluded, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
The Man with a Paralyzed Hand
(Matthew 12.9-14Mark 3.1-6)6 On another Sabbath Jesus went into a synagogue and taught. A man was there whose right hand was paralyzed. 7 Some teachers of the Law and some Pharisees wanted a reason to accuse Jesus of doing wrong, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. 8 But Jesus knew their thoughts and said to the man, “Stand up and come here to the front.” The man got up and stood there. 9 Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you: What does our Law allow us to do on the Sabbath? To help or to harm? To save someone's life or destroy it?” 10 He looked around at them all; then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand became well again.
11 They were filled with rage and began to discuss among themselves what they could do to Jesus.
Jesus Chooses the Twelve Apostles
(Matthew 10.1-4Mark 3.13-19)12 At that time Jesus went up a hill to pray and spent the whole night there praying to God. 13 When day came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he named apostles: 14 Simon (whom he named Peter) and his brother Andrew; James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, 15 Matthew and Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon (who was called the Patriot), 16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became the traitor.
Jesus Teaches and Heals
(Matthew 4.23-25)17 When Jesus had come down from the hill with the apostles, he stood on a level place with a large number of his disciples. A large crowd of people was there from all over Judea and from Jerusalem and from the coast cities of Tyre and Sidon; 18 they had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those who were troubled by evil spirits also came and were healed. 19 All the people tried to touch him, for power was going out from him and healing them all.
Happiness and Sorrow
(Matthew 5.1-12)20 Jesus looked at his disciples and said,
“Happy are you poor;
the Kingdom of God is yours!
21 “Happy are you who are hungry now;
you will be filled!
“Happy are you who weep now;
you will laugh!
22 “Happy are you when people hate you, reject you, insult you, and say that you are evil, all because of the Son of Man! 23 Be glad when that happens and dance for joy, because a great reward is kept for you in heaven. For their ancestors did the very same things to the prophets.
24 “But how terrible for you who are rich now;
you have had your easy life!
25 “How terrible for you who are full now;
you will go hungry!
“How terrible for you who laugh now;
you will mourn and weep!
26 “How terrible when all people speak well of you; their ancestors said the very same things about the false prophets.
Love for Enemies
(Matthew 5.38-48Matthew 7.12a)27 “But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If anyone hits you on one cheek, let him hit the other one too; if someone takes your coat, let him have your shirt as well. 30 Give to everyone who asks you for something, and when someone takes what is yours, do not ask for it back. 31 Do for others just what you want them to do for you.
32 “If you love only the people who love you, why should you receive a blessing? Even sinners love those who love them! 33 And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you receive a blessing? Even sinners do that! 34 And if you lend only to those from whom you hope to get it back, why should you receive a blessing? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount! 35 No! Love your enemies and do good to them; lend and expect nothing back. You will then have a great reward, and you will be children of the Most High God. For he is good to the ungrateful and the wicked. 36 Be merciful just as your Father is merciful.
Judging Others
(Matthew 7.1-5)37 “Do not judge others, and God will not judge you; do not condemn others, and God will not condemn you; forgive others, and God will forgive you. 38 Give to others, and God will give to you. Indeed, you will receive a full measure, a generous helping, poured into your hands—all that you can hold. The measure you use for others is the one that God will use for you.”
39 And Jesus told them this parable: “One blind man cannot lead another one; if he does, both will fall into a ditch. 40 No pupils are greater than their teacher; but all pupils, when they have completed their training, will be like their teacher.
41 “Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but pay no attention to the log in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Please, brother, let me take that speck out of your eye,’ yet cannot even see the log in your own eye? You hypocrite! First take the log out of your own eye, and then you will be able to see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.
A Tree and Its Fruit
(Matthew 7.16-20Matthew 12.33-35)43 “A healthy tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a poor tree bear good fruit. 44 Every tree is known by the fruit it bears; you do not pick figs from thorn bushes or gather grapes from bramble bushes. 45 A good person brings good out of the treasure of good things in his heart; a bad person brings bad out of his treasure of bad things. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
The Two House Builders
(Matthew 7.24-27)46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and yet don't do what I tell you? 47 Anyone who comes to me and listens to my words and obeys them—I will show you what he is like. 48 He is like a man who, in building his house, dug deep and laid the foundation on rock. The river flooded over and hit that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But anyone who hears my words and does not obey them is like a man who built his house without laying a foundation; when the flood hit that house it fell at once—and what a terrible crash that was!”
Los discípulos espigan en el día de reposo
(Mt 12.1-8Mc 2.23-28)1 En cierto día de reposo, al pasar Jesús por los sembrados, sus discípulos iban arrancando espigas y desgranándolas con las manos, para comerse el grano.
2 Algunos de los fariseos les dijeron: «¿Por qué hacen lo que no está permitido hacer en los días de reposo?»
3 Jesús les respondió: «¿Ni siquiera han leído lo que hizo David, cuando él y sus acompañantes tuvieron hambre?
4 Pues entró en la casa de Dios y tomó los panes de la proposición, que solo a los sacerdotes les es permitido comer. Y comió David, y los compartió con sus acompañantes.»
5 Y añadió: «El Hijo del Hombre es también Señor del día de reposo.»
El hombre de la mano atrofiada
(Mt 12.9-14Mc 3.1-6)6 Otro día de reposo, Jesús entró en la sinagoga y comenzó a enseñar. Había allí un hombre que tenía la mano derecha atrofiada,
7 y los escribas y los fariseos, que buscaban un motivo para acusar a Jesús, lo observaban para ver si en el día de reposo sanaba a aquel hombre.
8 Pero Jesús, que sabía lo que pensaban, dijo al hombre que tenía la mano atrofiada: «Levántate, y ponte en medio.» El hombre se puso de pie,
9 y Jesús dijo: «Voy a preguntarles algo. ¿Qué está permitido hacer en los días de reposo? ¿El bien, o el mal? ¿Salvar una vida, o quitar la vida?»
10 Miró entonces a todos los que estaban alrededor, y dijo al hombre: «Extiende tu mano.» Aquel hombre lo hizo así, y su mano quedó sana.
11 Los escribas y los fariseos se pusieron furiosos y comenzaron a discutir qué podrían hacer contra Jesús.
Elección de los doce apóstoles
(Mt 10.1-4Mc 3.13-19)12 Por esos días Jesús fue al monte a orar, y pasó la noche orando a Dios.
13 Al llegar el día, llamó a sus discípulos y escogió a doce de ellos, a los cuales también llamó apóstoles, a saber:
14 Simón, a quien llamó Pedro; su hermano Andrés, Jacobo, Juan, Felipe, Bartolomé,
15 Mateo, Tomás, Jacobo hijo de Alfeo, Simón, conocido como el Zelote,
16 Judas hijo de Jacobo, y Judas Iscariote, que llegó a ser el traidor.
Jesús atiende a una multitud
(Mt 4.23-25)17 Jesús descendió con ellos y se detuvo en un llano, en compañía de sus discípulos y de una gran multitud de toda Judea, de Jerusalén y de la costa de Tiro y Sidón. Habían venido a escucharlo y a ser sanados de sus enfermedades.
18 También eran sanados los que eran atormentados por espíritus impuros.
19 Toda la gente procuraba tocarlo, porque de él salía un poder que sanaba a todos.
Bienaventuranzas y ayes
(Mt 5.1-12)20 Jesús miró a sus discípulos y les dijo: «Bienaventurados ustedes los pobres, porque el reino de Dios les pertenece.
21 »Bienaventurados ustedes los que ahora tienen hambre, porque serán saciados. Bienaventurados ustedes los que ahora lloran, porque reirán.
22 »Bienaventurados serán ustedes cuando, por causa del Hijo del Hombre, la gente los odie, los segregue, los vitupere, y menosprecie su nombre como algo malo.
23 Cuando llegue ese día, alégrense y llénense de gozo, porque grande será el galardón que recibirán en los cielos. ¡Eso mismo hicieron con los profetas los antepasados de esta gente!
24 »Pero ¡ay de ustedes los ricos!, porque ya han recibido su consuelo.
25 »¡Ay de ustedes, los que ahora están satisfechos!, porque habrán de pasar hambre.
»¡Ay de ustedes, los que ahora ríen!, porque habrán de llorar y de lamentarse.
26 »¡Ay de ustedes, cuando todos los alaben!, porque lo mismo hacían con los falsos profetas los antepasados de esta gente.
El amor hacia los enemigos
(Mt 5.38-48)27 »A ustedes, los que me escuchan, les digo: Amen a sus enemigos, hagan bien a quienes los odian,
28 bendigan a quienes los maldicen, y oren por quienes los calumnian.
29 Si alguno te golpea en una mejilla, preséntale también la otra. Si alguien te quita la capa, deja que se lleve también la túnica.
30 A todo el que te pida, dale; y a quien se lleve lo que es tuyo, no le pidas que te lo devuelva.
La regla de oro
(Mt 7.12)31 »Traten a los demás como ustedes quieran ser tratados.
32 Porque si ustedes aman solo a quienes los aman, ¿qué mérito tienen? ¡Hasta los pecadores aman a quienes los aman!
33 Y si ustedes tratan bien solo a quienes los tratan bien a ustedes, ¿qué mérito tienen? ¡Hasta los pecadores hacen lo mismo!
34 Si prestan algo a aquellos de quienes ustedes esperan recibir algo, ¿qué mérito tienen? ¡Hasta los pecadores se prestan unos a otros para recibir otro tanto!
35 Ustedes deben amar a sus enemigos, hacer el bien y dar prestado, sin esperar nada a cambio. Grande será entonces el galardón que recibirán, y serán hijos del Altísimo. Porque él es benigno con los ingratos y con los malvados.
36 Por lo tanto, sean compasivos, como también su Padre es compasivo.
El juzgar a los demás
(Mt 7.1-5)37 »No juzguen, y no serán juzgados. No condenen, y no serán condenados. Perdonen, y serán perdonados.
38 Den, y se les dará una medida buena, incluso apretada, remecida y desbordante. Porque con la misma medida con que ustedes midan, serán medidos.»
39 Les dijo también una parábola: «¿Acaso un ciego puede guiar a otro ciego? ¿Acaso no se caerán los dos en algún hoyo?
40 El discípulo no es superior a su maestro, pero el que complete su aprendizaje será como su maestro.
41 ¿Por qué miras la paja que está en el ojo de tu hermano, y no miras la viga que está en tu propio ojo?
42 ¿Cómo puedes decirle a tu hermano: “Hermano, déjame sacarte la paja que tienes en tu ojo”, si no ves la viga que tienes en tu propio ojo? ¡Hipócrita! Saca primero la viga de tu propio ojo, y entonces podrás ver bien para sacar la paja que está en el ojo de tu hermano.
Por sus frutos serán conocidos
(Mt 7.15-20)43 »Ningún árbol bueno produce frutos malos, ni tampoco un árbol malo produce frutos buenos.
44 Porque cada árbol se conoce por su fruto. No se cortan higos de los espinos, ni se vendimian uvas de las zarzas.
45 El hombre bueno, saca lo bueno del buen tesoro de su corazón. El hombre malo, saca lo malo del mal tesoro de su corazón; porque de la abundancia del corazón habla la boca.
Los dos cimientos
(Mt 7.24-27)46 »¿Por qué me llaman ustedes “Señor, Señor”, y no hacen lo que les mando hacer?
47 Les voy a decir como quién es el que viene a mí, y oye mis palabras y las pone en práctica:
48 Es como quien, al construir una casa, cava hondo y pone los cimientos sobre la roca. En caso de una inundación, si el río golpea con ímpetu la casa, no logra sacudirla porque está asentada sobre la roca.
49 Pero el que oye mis palabras y no las pone en práctica, es como quien construye su casa sobre el suelo y no le pone cimientos. Si el río golpea con ímpetu la casa, la derrumba y la deja completamente en ruinas.»
