Egypt Is Compared to a Cedar Tree
1 On the first day of the third month of the eleventh year of our exile, the Lord spoke to me. 2 “Mortal man,” he said, “say to the king of Egypt and all his people:
How powerful you are!
What can I compare you to?
3 You are like a cedar in Lebanon,
With beautiful, shady branches,
A tree so tall it reaches the clouds.
4 There was water to make it grow,
And underground rivers to feed it.
They watered the place where the tree was growing
And sent streams to all the trees of the forest.
5 Because it was well-watered,
It grew taller than other trees.
Its branches grew thick and long.
6 Every kind of bird built nests in its branches;
The wild animals bore their young in its shelter;
The nations of the world rested in its shade.
7 How beautiful the tree was—
So tall, with such long branches.
Its roots reached down to the deep-flowing streams.
8 No cedar in God's garden could compare with it.
No fir tree ever had such branches,
And no plane tree such limbs.
No tree in God's own garden was so beautiful.
9 I made it beautiful, with spreading branches.
It was the envy of every tree in Eden, the garden of God.
10 “Now then, I, the Sovereign Lord, will tell you what is going to happen to that tree that grew until it reached the clouds. As it grew taller it grew proud; 11 so I have rejected it and will let a foreign ruler have it. He will give that tree what it deserves for its wickedness. 12 Ruthless foreigners will cut it down and leave it. Its branches and broken limbs will fall on every mountain and valley in the country. All the nations that have been living in its shade will go away. 13 The birds will come and perch on the fallen tree, and the wild animals will walk over its branches. 14 And so from now on, no tree, no matter how well-watered it is, will grow that tall again or push its top through the clouds and reach such a height. All of them are doomed to die like mortals, doomed to join those who go down to the world of the dead.”
15 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “On the day when the tree goes to the world of the dead, I will make the underground waters cover it as a sign of mourning. I will hold back the rivers and not let the many streams flow out. Because the tree has died, I will bring darkness over the Lebanon Mountains and make all the trees of the forest wither. 16 When I send it down to the world of the dead, the noise of its downfall will shake the nations. All the trees of Eden and all the choice, well-watered trees of Lebanon who have gone to the world below will be pleased at its downfall. 17 They will go with it to the world of the dead to join those that have already fallen. And all who live under its shadow will be scattered among the nations.
18 “The tree is the king of Egypt and all his people. Not even the trees in Eden were so tall and impressive. But now, like the trees of Eden, it will go down to the world of the dead and join the ungodly and those killed in battle. I have spoken,” says the Sovereign Lord.
1 El día primero del mes tercero del año undécimo, la palabra del Señor vino a mí, y me dijo:
2 «Hijo de hombre, dile al faraón, rey de Egipto, y a su pueblo: “¿A quién te puedes comparar en arrogancia?
3 Fíjate que Asiria era como un cedro del Líbano, con hermosas ramas, frondoso ramaje e impresionante altura. ¡Su copa se alzaba sobre un espeso ramaje!
4 Las aguas lo hicieron crecer, el abismo lo encumbró; sus ríos corrían alrededor de su tronco, y compartía sus corrientes con todos los árboles del bosque.
5 Fue así como llegó a ser más alto que todos los árboles del bosque; sus ramas se multiplicaron y, gracias a la abundancia de agua, el ramaje que había echado se extendió.
6 En sus ramas anidaban todas las aves del cielo, y bajo su sombra parían todas las bestias del campo. ¡Muchas naciones se acogían a su sombra!
7 Con sus ramas extendidas llegó a ser muy grande y hermoso, porque estaba plantado junto a muchas aguas.
8 No había en el huerto de Dios cedro que lo cubriera; las ramas de las hayas no eran comparables a las suyas, ni el ramaje de los castaños se le podía comparar. ¡Ningún árbol del huerto de Dios era semejante a él en hermosura!
9 Con su tupido ramaje yo lo embellecí; todos los árboles que estaban en Edén, en el huerto de Dios, lo envidiaban.”»
10 Por lo tanto, así ha dicho Dios el Señor:
«Puesto que su corazón se ha enaltecido por causa de la altura que ha alcanzado, y por haberse levantado por encima de las ramas más altas,
11 yo lo he desechado y voy a entregarlo en manos de un pueblo poderoso, que lo tratará según su maldad.
12 Naciones extrañas y poderosas lo destruirán y lo derribarán; sus ramas caerán por todos los montes y los valles; su ramaje quedará resquebrajado por todos los arroyos de la tierra, y todos los pueblos de la tierra se alejarán de su sombra y lo abandonarán.
13 Sobre sus ruinas harán su habitación todas las aves del cielo, y sobre sus ramas se echarán todas las bestias del campo,
14 para que ningún árbol vuelva a engreírse por su altura ni levante su copa por encima de la espesura, aun cuando esté bien regado y crezca junto a las aguas, porque todos están destinados a morir e irse a las profundidades de la tierra, como los hijos de los hombres, que descienden a la fosa.»
15 Así ha dicho Dios el Señor:
«El día que ese cedro descendió al sepulcro, le ordené al abismo guardar luto por él; detuve sus ríos, y las muchas aguas dejaron de correr. Por él cubrí de tinieblas al Líbano, y todos los árboles del bosque se secaron.
16 Cuando lo hice descender al sepulcro, junto con todos los que bajan al sepulcro, con el estruendo de su caída hice temblar a las naciones. En las profundidades de la tierra, todos los mejores árboles del Edén y del Líbano, todos los que beben aguas, fueron consolados.
17 Ellos también descendieron al sepulcro con él y con los que murieron a filo de espada, con los que fueron su punto de apoyo, con los que estuvieron a su sombra en medio de las naciones.
18 ¿Qué árbol, entre los árboles del Edén, puede compararse contigo en gloria y en grandeza? Sin embargo, caerás a lo más profundo de la tierra, junto con los árboles de Edén, y yacerás entre los incircuncisos, junto con los que murieron a filo de espada.
»Esto es el faraón y toda su grandeza.»
