1 Jehoshaphat died and was buried in the royal tombs in David's City and his son Jehoram succeeded him as king.
King Jehoram of Judah
(2 Kings 8.17-24)2 Jehoram son of King Jehoshaphat of Judah had six brothers: Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariahu, Michael, and Shephatiah. 3 Their father gave them large amounts of gold, silver, and other valuable possessions, and placed each one in charge of one of the fortified cities of Judah. But because Jehoram was the oldest, Jehoshaphat made him his successor. 4 When Jehoram was in firm control of the kingdom, he had all his brothers killed, and also some Israelite officials.
5 Jehoram became king at the age of thirty-two, and he ruled in Jerusalem for eight years. 6 He followed the wicked example of King Ahab and the other kings of Israel, because he had married one of Ahab's daughters. He sinned against the Lord, 7 but the Lord was not willing to destroy the dynasty of David, because he had made a covenant with David and promised that his descendants would always continue to rule.
8 During Jehoram's reign Edom revolted against Judah and became an independent kingdom. 9 So Jehoram and his officers set out with chariots and invaded Edom. There the Edomite army surrounded them, but during the night they managed to break out and escape. 10 Edom has been independent of Judah ever since. During this same period the city of Libnah also revolted, because Jehoram had abandoned the Lord, the God of his ancestors. 11 He even built pagan places of worship in the Judean highlands and led the people of Judah and Jerusalem to sin against the Lord.
12 The prophet Elijah sent Jehoram a letter, which read as follows: “The Lord, the God of your ancestor David, condemns you, because you did not follow the example of your father, King Jehoshaphat, or that of your grandfather, King Asa. 13 Instead, you have followed the example of the kings of Israel and have led the people of Judah and Jerusalem into being unfaithful to God, just as Ahab and his successors led Israel into unfaithfulness. You even murdered your brothers, who were better men than you are. 14 As a result, the Lord will severely punish your people, your children, and your wives, and will destroy your possessions. 15 You yourself will suffer a painful intestinal disease that will grow worse day by day.”
16 Some Philistines and Arabs lived near where some Ethiopians had settled along the coast. The Lord caused them to go to war against Jehoram. 17 They invaded Judah, looted the royal palace, and carried off as prisoners all the king's wives and sons except Ahaziah, his youngest son.
18 Then after all this, the Lord brought on the king a painful disease of the intestines. 19 For almost two years it grew steadily worse until finally the king died in agony. His subjects did not light a bonfire in mourning for him as had been done for his ancestors.
20 Jehoram had become king at the age of thirty-two and had ruled in Jerusalem for eight years. Nobody was sorry when he died. They buried him in David's City, but not in the royal tombs.
Reinado de Jorán de Judá
(2 R 8.16-24)1 Finalmente, Josafat descansó entre sus antepasados, y lo sepultaron en la ciudad de David. En su lugar reinó su hijo Jorán,
2 cuyos hermanos e hijos de Josafat fueron Azarías, Yejiel, Zacarías, Azarías, Micael y Sefatías. Todos ellos eran hijos del rey Josafat de Judá,
3 y recibieron de su padre muchos regalos de oro y plata, objetos preciosos y ciudades fortificadas en Judá, aunque el reino se lo cedió a Jorán, porque este era el primogénito.
4 Tan pronto como Jorán ascendió al trono de su padre y se afirmó en el poder, mató a filo de espada a todos sus hermanos, y también a algunos de los jefes de Israel.
5 Comenzó a reinar cuando tenía treinta y dos años, y reinó en Jerusalén ocho años.
6 Pero siguió los pasos de los reyes de Israel, a la manera de la casa de Ajab, pues tuvo por mujer a la hija de Ajab y cometió mucha maldad a los ojos del Señor.
7 Pero el Señor no quiso destruir la casa de David, por causa del pacto que había hecho con David y porque le había prometido mantener siempre encendida su lámpara y la de sus hijos.
8 Durante el reinado de Jorán, los edomitas se rebelaron contra el dominio de Judá, y pusieron en el trono su propio rey.
9 Entonces Jorán marchó con sus jefes y con todos sus carros de guerra, y una noche atacó y derrotó a los edomitas que lo habían sitiado, y también a todos los comandantes de sus carros.
10 A pesar de esto, Edom se liberó del dominio de Judá, hasta el día de hoy.
Por ese mismo tiempo, Libna se liberó del dominio de Jorán, porque este se apartó del Señor, el Dios de sus padres.
11 Además de esto, Jorán construyó lugares altos en los montes de Judá, con lo que hizo que los habitantes de Jerusalén se prostituyeran, lo mismo que los de Judá.
12 Pero le llegó una carta del profeta Elías, la cual decía:
«Así ha dicho el Señor, el Dios de David, tu padre: Puesto que no has seguido el ejemplo de Josafat, tu padre, ni el del rey Asa de Judá,
13 sino que has imitado el mal ejemplo de los reyes de Israel y has hecho que Judá y los habitantes de Jerusalén se prostituyan, como se prostituyó la casa de Ajab, y además has dado muerte a tus hermanos, a la familia de tu padre, los cuales eran mejores que tú,14 ahora el Señor te enviará una plaga mortal, y con ella herirá de muerte a tu pueblo, y a tus hijos y a tus mujeres, y a todo lo que tienes.15 A ti te castigará con muchas enfermedades. Tan persistente será tu mal, que hasta los intestinos se te saldrán.»16 Y así, el Señor suscitó contra Jorán la ira de los filisteos y de los árabes que estaban junto a los etíopes,
17 y todos ellos atacaron a Judá e invadieron su territorio; capturaron a sus hijos y a sus mujeres, y se apoderaron de todos los bienes que hallaron en el palacio real. Lo único que le quedó a Jorán fue Joacaz, su hijo menor.
18 Después de todo esto, el Señor le mandó una enfermedad incurable en los intestinos.
19 Transcurrió mucho tiempo, y al cabo de dos años la enfermedad hizo que los intestinos se le salieran, por lo que murió de una enfermedad muy penosa. No se prendió ninguna hoguera en su honor, como se había hecho con sus padres.
20 Jorán tenía treinta y dos años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó en Jerusalén ocho años. Cuando murió, nadie lo echó de menos. Fue sepultado en la ciudad de David, pero no en los sepulcros reservados para los reyes.
