The Cities of the Levites
1 The leaders of the Levite families went to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and to the heads of the families of all the tribes of Israel. 2 There at Shiloh in the land of Canaan they said to them, “The Lord commanded through Moses that we were to be given cities to live in, as well as pasture land around them for our livestock.” 3 So in accordance with the Lord's command the people of Israel gave the Levites certain cities and pasture lands out of their own territories.
4 The families of the Levite clan of Kohath were the first to be assigned cities. The families who were descended from Aaron the priest were assigned thirteen cities from the territories of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin. 5 The rest of the clan of Kohath was assigned ten cities from the territories of Ephraim, Dan, and West Manasseh.
6 The clan of Gershon was assigned thirteen cities from the territories of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and East Manasseh.
7 The families of the clan of Merari were assigned twelve cities from the territories of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.
8 By drawing lots, the people of Israel assigned these cities and their pasture lands to the Levites, as the Lord had commanded through Moses.
9 These are the names of the cities from the territories of Judah and Simeon which were given 10 to the descendants of Aaron who were of the clan of Kohath, which was descended from Levi. Their assignment was the first to be made. 11 They were given the city of Arba (Arba was Anak's father), now called Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, along with the pasture land surrounding it. 12 However, the fields of the city, as well as its towns, had already been given to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession.
13 In addition to Hebron (one of the cities of refuge), the following cities were assigned to the descendants of Aaron the priest: Libnah, 14 Jattir, Eshtemoa, 15 Holon, Debir, 16 Ain, Juttah, and Beth Shemesh, with their pasture lands: nine cities from the tribes of Judah and Simeon. 17 From the territory of Benjamin they were given four cities: Gibeon, Geba, 18 Anathoth, and Almon, with their pasture lands. 19 Thirteen cities in all, with their pasture lands, were given to the priests, the descendants of Aaron.
20 The other families of the Levite clan of Kohath were assigned some cities from the territory of Ephraim. 21 They were given four cities: Shechem and its pasture lands in the hill country of Ephraim (one of the cities of refuge), Gezer, 22 Kibzaim, and Beth Horon, with their pasture lands. 23 From the territory of Dan they were given four cities: Eltekeh, Gibbethon, 24 Aijalon, and Gathrimmon, with their pasture lands. 25 From the territory of West Manasseh they were given two cities: Taanach and Gathrimmon, with their pasture lands. 26 These families of the clan of Kohath received ten cities in all, with their pasture lands.
27 Another group of Levites, the clan of Gershon, received from the territory of East Manasseh two cities: Golan in Bashan (one of the cities of refuge) and Beeshterah, with their pasture lands. 28 From the territory of Issachar they received four cities: Kishion, Daberath, 29 Jarmuth, and Engannim, with their pasture lands. 30 From the territory of Asher they received four cities: Mishal, Abdon, 31 Helkath, and Rehob, with their pasture lands. 32 From the territory of Naphtali they received three cities: Kedesh in Galilee, with its pasture lands (one of the cities of refuge), Hammoth Dor, and Kartan, with their pasture lands. 33 The various families of the clan of Gershon received a total of thirteen cities with their pasture lands.
34 The rest of the Levites, the clan of Merari, received from the territory of Zebulun four cities: Jokneam, Kartah, 35 Dimnah, and Nahalal, with their pasture lands. 36 From the territory of Reuben they received four cities: Bezer, Jahaz, 37 Kedemoth, and Mephaath, with their pasture lands. 38 From the tribe of Gad they received four cities: Ramoth in Gilead, with its pasture lands (one of the cities of refuge), Mahanaim, 39 Heshbon, and Jazer, with their pasture lands. 40 So the clan of Merari was assigned a total of twelve cities.
41-42 From the land that the people of Israel possessed, a total of forty-eight cities, with the pasture lands around them, was given to the Levites.
Israel Takes Possession of the Land
43 So the Lord gave to Israel all the land that he had solemnly promised their ancestors he would give them. When they had taken possession of it, they settled down there. 44 The Lord gave them peace throughout the land, just as he had promised their ancestors. Not one of all their enemies had been able to stand against them, because the Lord gave the Israelites the victory over all their enemies. 45 The Lord kept every one of the promises that he had made to the people of Israel.
Ciudades de los levitas
(1 Cr 6.54-81)1 Los jefes de las familias levitas fueron a hablar con el sacerdote Eleazar, y con Josué hijo de Nun y los jefes de las tribus de Israel,
2 los cuales estaban en Silo, en la tierra de Canaán, y les dijeron:
«El Señor le ordenó a Moisés que nos dieran ciudades donde pudiéramos habitar, con ejidos para nuestros ganados.»
3 Entonces de su propia herencia el pueblo de Israel les dio a los levitas ciudades con sus ejidos, porque el Señor se lo había prometido.
4 El primer sorteo fue para las familias de los coatitas, que eran descendientes del sacerdote Aarón y también levitas. Ellos recibieron ciudades de las tribus de Judá, de Simeón y de Benjamín; en total, trece ciudades.
5 A los otros hijos de Coat les tocaron por sorteo diez ciudades de las tribus de Efraín, de Dan y de la media tribu de Manasés.
6 Los hijos de Guersón recibieron por sorteo trece ciudades de las tribus de Isacar, de Aser, de Neftalí y de la media tribu de Manasés que se había quedado en Basán.
7 Los hijos de Merari recibieron doce ciudades de las tribus de Rubén, de Gad y de Zabulón, según el número de sus familias.
8 Los hijos de Israel les dieron a los levitas, por sorteo, estas ciudades con sus ejidos, tal y como el Señor se lo ordenó a Moisés.
9 Las tribus de los descendientes de Judá y de Simeón cedieron las ciudades que ya han sido mencionadas,
10 y que las familias de Coat, hijos de Aarón, recibieron de los hijos de Leví, porque ellos fueron los primeros en el sorteo.
11 En el monte de Judá les dieron Hebrón, que era Quiriat Arbá, la tierra del gigante Anac, con los ejidos que la rodeaban;
12 pero a Caleb hijo de Yefune le dieron el campo de la ciudad y sus aldeas.
13 A los hijos del sacerdote Aarón les dieron Hebrón con sus ejidos, como ciudad de refugio para los homicidas, y además Libna y sus ejidos,
14 Jatir y sus ejidos, Estemoa y sus ejidos,
15 Holón y sus ejidos, Debir y sus ejidos,
16 Ayin y sus ejidos, Yutá y sus ejidos, y Bet Semes y sus ejidos; es decir, nueve ciudades para estas dos tribus.
17 De la tribu de Benjamín recibieron Gabaón y Geba, con sus ejidos;
18 Anatot y Almón con sus ejidos; cuatro ciudades.
19 En total, trece ciudades y sus ejidos fueron para los sacerdotes hijos de Aarón.
20 Los levitas que aun quedaban, y que pertenecían a las familias de los hijos de Coat, recibieron por sorteo cuatro ciudades de la tribu de Efraín.
21 En el monte de Efraín les dieron Siquén, que era una ciudad de refugio para los homicidas, con sus ejidos, y además Guézer,
22 Quibsayin y Bet Jorón con sus ejidos.
23 De la tribu de Dan, recibieron cuatro ciudades con sus ejidos: Elteque, Guibetón,
24 Ayalón y Gat Rimón.
25 De la media tribu de Manasés recibieron dos ciudades con sus ejidos: Tanac y Gat Rimón.
26 Las ciudades que recibió el resto de las familias de los hijos de Coat fueron diez, con sus ejidos.
27 De la media tribu de Manasés los hijos de Guersón, de las familias levitas, recibieron dos ciudades con sus ejidos: Golán en Basán, ciudad de refugio para los homicidas; y Besterá con sus ejidos.
28 De la tribu de Isacar, recibieron cuatro ciudades con sus ejidos; Cisón, Daberat,
29 Jarmut y Enganín.
30 De la tribu de Aser, recibieron cuatro ciudades con sus ejidos: Misal, Abdón,
31 Jelcat y Rejob.
32 De la tribu de Neftalí, recibieron tres ciudades con sus ejidos: Cedes en Galilea, que era una ciudad de refugio para los homicidas, Jamot Dor y Cartán.
33 En total, las ciudades que recibieron los guersonitas, con sus ejidos y según el número de sus familias, fueron trece.
34 Los levitas que quedaban de las familias de los hijos de Merari recibieron de la tribu de Zabulón cuatro ciudades con sus ejidos: Jocneán, Carta,
35 Dimna y Nalal.
36 De la tribu de Rubén recibieron cuatro ciudades con sus ejidos: Beser, Yahás,
37 Cademot y Mefagat.
38 De la tribu de Gad, recibieron cuatro ciudades con sus ejidos: Ramot de Galaad, que era una ciudad de refugio para los homicidas, Majanayin,
39 Jesbón y Jazer.
40 En total, las ciudades con sus ejidos que les tocaron por sorteo a los hijos de Merari, es decir, a los levitas que quedaban, según el número de sus familias, fueron doce.
41 En total, las ciudades con sus ejidos que recibieron los levitas de entre las posesiones del pueblo de Israel, fueron cuarenta y ocho.
42 Estas ciudades estaban distantes entre sí, y todas estaban rodeadas de sus ejidos.
Israel ocupa la tierra
43 Así fue como el Señor dio a Israel toda la tierra que había jurado a sus padres que les daría, y de la cual tomaron en posesión para habitarla.
44 Y el Señor les dio reposo, conforme a todo lo que les había prometido a sus padres. Ninguno de sus enemigos pudo presentarles batalla, porque el Señor los había vencido.
45 No faltó una sola de todas las promesas que el Señor le había hecho a la casa de Israel. Todas ellas se cumplieron.
