In Praise of Wisdom
1 There are mines where silver is dug;
There are places where gold is refined.
2 We dig iron out of the ground
And melt copper out of the stones.
3 Miners explore the deepest darkness.
They search the depths of the earth
And dig for rocks in the darkness.
4 Far from where anyone lives
Or human feet ever travel,
They dig the shafts of mines.
There they work in loneliness,
Clinging to ropes in the pits.
5 Food grows out of the earth,
But underneath the same earth
All is torn up and crushed.
6 The stones of the earth contain sapphires,
And its dust contains gold.
7 No hawk sees the roads to the mines,
And no vulture ever flies over them.
8 No lion or other fierce beast
Ever travels those lonely roads.
9 Miners dig the hardest rocks,
Dig mountains away at their base.
10 As they tunnel through the rocks,
They discover precious stones.
11 They dig to the sources of rivers
And bring to light what is hidden.
12 But where can wisdom be found?
Where can we learn to understand?
13 Wisdom is not to be found among mortals;
No one knows its true value.
14 The depths of the oceans and seas
Say that wisdom is not found there.
15 It cannot be bought with silver or gold.
16 The finest gold and jewels
Cannot equal its value.
17 It is worth more than gold,
Than a gold vase or finest glass.
18 The value of wisdom is more
Than coral or crystal or rubies.
19 The finest topaz and the purest gold
Cannot compare with the value of wisdom.
20 Where, then, is the source of wisdom?
Where can we learn to understand?
21 No living creature can see it,
Not even a bird in flight.
22 Even death and destruction
Admit they have heard only rumors.
23 God alone knows the way,
Knows the place where wisdom is found,
24 Because he sees the ends of the earth,
Sees everything under the sky.
25 When God gave the wind its power
And determined the size of the sea;
26 When God decided where the rain would fall,
And the path that the thunderclouds travel;
27 It was then he saw wisdom and tested its worth—
He gave it his approval.
28 God said to us humans,
“To be wise, you must have reverence for the Lord.
To understand, you must turn from evil.”
Elogio de la sabiduría
1 «La plata se extrae de las minas,
y el oro se refina en el crisol.
2 Del polvo de la tierra se saca el hierro,
y el cobre se aparta de la escoria.
3 Con el fuego se ha puesto fin a las tinieblas,
y el hombre examina con detalle
cada piedra que hay en esa densa oscuridad.
4 Abre minas en lugares no habitados,
en sitios donde nadie ha plantado el pie,
y entran los mineros, balanceándose con sogas.
5 De la tierra se obtiene el alimento,
y abajo de ella todo se convierte en fuego.
6 En su seno se encuentran zafiros,
y aun el polvo de la tierra es oro.
7 »Son lugares que las aves desconocen,
y que jamás vieron los ojos de los buitres.
8 Nunca pasaron por allí las fieras,
ni tampoco el león feroz pisó ese lugar.
9 Con el duro pedernal en la mano,
el hombre cava la raíz de las montañas.
10 Hace túneles en las rocas,
y sus ojos descubren piedras preciosas.
11 Explora el lugar donde nacen los ríos,
y saca a la luz muchas cosas escondidas.
12 »Pero ¿dónde se halla la sabiduría?
¿En qué lugar está la inteligencia?
13 Nadie sabe lo que vale,
pues no se halla en este mundo.
14 El mar profundo dice: “Aquí no está”,
y el océano asegura: “Yo no la tengo”.
15 La sabiduría no se compra con oro,
ni su precio puede pagarse con plata.
16 No se compra con oro de Ofir,
ni con el precioso ónice, ni con el zafiro.
17 Ni los diamantes ni el oro se le comparan,
ni se da a cambio de finas alhajas de oro.
18 No se le comparan el coral y las perlas;
la sabiduría es más valiosa que las piedras preciosas.
19 Ni el topacio de Etiopía, ni el oro más fino,
son de tanto valor como ella.
20 »¿De dónde viene la sabiduría?
¿En qué lugar se encuentra la inteligencia?
21 Se halla escondida de todo ser vivo;
se halla escondida de las aves del cielo.
22 Aunque la muerte y el sepulcro aseguran
que a sus oídos ha llegado su fama.
23 »Solo Dios sabe llegar hasta ella;
solo él sabe en dónde se halla.
24 Con su mirada ve hasta los confines de la tierra,
y ve también lo que pasa bajo el cielo.
25 Cuando Dios determinó el peso del viento,
y midió el agua de mares y ríos;
26 cuando estableció una ley para las lluvias,
y señaló la ruta de los relámpagos,
27 vio a la sabiduría, que estaba allí,
y la puso a prueba y reconoció su valor.
28 Entonces dijo a la humanidad:
“El temor del Señor es la sabiduría.
Quien se aparta del mal es inteligente.”»
