Jeremiah Wears an Ox Yoke
1 Soon after Josiah's son Zedekiah became king of Judah, the Lord told me 2 to make myself a yoke out of leather straps and wooden crossbars and to put it on my neck. 3 Then the Lord told me to send a message to the kings of Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre, and Sidon through their ambassadors who had come to Jerusalem to see King Zedekiah. 4 The Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, told me to command them to tell their kings that the Lord had said: 5 “By my great power and strength I created the world, human beings, and all the animals that live on the earth; and I give it to anyone I choose. 6 I am the one who has placed all these nations under the power of my servant, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia, and I have made even the wild animals serve him. 7 All nations will serve him, and they will serve his son and his grandson until the time comes for his own nation to fall. Then his nation will serve powerful nations and great kings.
8 “But if any nation or kingdom will not submit to his rule, then I will punish that nation by war, starvation, and disease until I have let Nebuchadnezzar destroy it completely. 9 Do not listen to your prophets or to those who claim they can predict the future, either by dreams or by calling up the spirits of the dead or by magic. They all tell you not to submit to the king of Babylonia. 10 They are deceiving you and will cause you to be taken far away from your country. I will drive you out, and you will be destroyed. 11 But if any nation submits to the king of Babylonia and serves him, then I will let it stay on in its own land, to farm it and live there. I, the Lord, have spoken.”
12 I said the same thing to King Zedekiah of Judah, “Submit to the king of Babylonia. Serve him and his people, and you will live. 13 Why should you and your people die in war or of starvation or disease? That is what the Lord has said will happen to any nation that does not submit to the king of Babylonia. 14 Do not listen to the prophets who tell you not to surrender to him. They are deceiving you. 15 The Lord himself has said that he did not send them and that they are lying to you in his name. And so he will drive you out, and you will be killed, you and the prophets who are telling you these lies.”
16 Then I told the priests and the people that the Lord had said: “Do not listen to the prophets who say that the Temple treasures will soon be brought back from Babylonia. They are lying to you. 17 Don't listen to them! Submit to the king of Babylonia and you will live! Why should this city become a pile of ruins? 18 If they are really prophets and if they have my message, let them ask me, the Lord Almighty, not to allow the treasures that remain in the Temple and in the royal palace to be taken to Babylonia.”
( 19-20 When King Nebuchadnezzar took away to Babylonia the king of Judah, Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim, and the leading men of Judah and Jerusalem, he left the columns, the bronze tank, the carts, and some of the other Temple treasures.)
21 “Listen to what I, the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, say about the treasures that are left in the Temple and in the royal palace in Jerusalem: 22 They will be taken to Babylonia and will remain there until I turn my attention to them. Then I will bring them back and restore them to this place. I, the Lord, have spoken.”
La señal de los yugos
1 Al principio del reinado en Judá de Joacín hijo de Josías, la palabra del Señor vino a mí, y me dijo así:
2 «Jeremías, hazte unas coyundas y unos yugos, y póntelos sobre el cuello.
3 Luego, por medio de los mensajeros que vienen a Jerusalén para ver a Sedequías rey de Judá, se los enviarás a los reyes de Edom, Moab, Amón, Tiro y Sidón,
4 junto con el siguiente mensaje para sus respectivos señores: “Yo, el Señor de los ejércitos y Dios de Israel, les recuerdo esto:
5 Yo, con gran despliegue de poder y con mi brazo extendido, hice la tierra y al hombre, y también a los animales que están sobre la tierra, y la tierra se la di a quien mejor me pareció.
6 Ahora he puesto todos estos territorios en manos de mi siervo Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, y hasta le he dado los animales salvajes, para que le sirvan.
7 Y todas las naciones le servirán, a él, y a su hijo y a su nieto, hasta que llegue el momento de que su propio país sea reducido a servidumbre por muchas naciones y grandes reyes.
8 Yo castigaré a la nación y al reino que no sirva a Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia, ni doblegue su cuello bajo su yugo; los castigaré con espada, y hambre y peste, hasta que a él mismo le permita destruirlos por completo.
—Palabra del Señor.9 »”Así que ustedes no presten oído a sus profetas, adivinos, intérpretes de sueños, agoreros y encantadores, que les dicen que no se rindan ante el rey de Babilonia.
10 Lo que ellos les dicen es mentira. Lo que buscan es que ustedes se alejen de su tierra, para que yo los expulse y ustedes mueran.
11 Pero a la nación que doblegue su cuello al yugo del rey de Babilonia y le sirva, yo la dejaré en su tierra, para que la cultive y la habite.”»
—Palabra del Señor.12 Estas mismas palabras se las comuniqué a Sedequías rey de Judá. Le dije:
«Dobleguen su cuello al yugo del rey de Babilonia, y sírvanle a él y a su pueblo. Así seguirán con vida.
13 ¿Por qué han de morir tú y tu pueblo por la espada, o de hambre y de peste, como ha dicho el Señor que pasará con la nación que no sirva al rey de Babilonia?
14 No hagan caso de las palabras de los profetas que les dicen que no sirvan al rey de Babilonia. Lo que ellos les profetizan es mentira.
15 El Señor no los ha enviado. Ellos profetizan falsamente en nombre del Señor, para que él los expulse de su tierra y ustedes mueran, junto con los profetas que les anuncian tales cosas.»
—Palabra del Señor.16 También hablé con los sacerdotes y con todo este pueblo. Les dije:
«Así ha dicho el Señor: “No hagan caso de las palabras de esos profetas que les dicen que muy pronto los utensilios de la casa del Señor serán traídos de Babilonia. Eso que les profetizan es una mentira.”»
17 No les hagan caso. Sirvan al rey de Babilonia, y seguirán con vida. ¿Por qué tiene que ser destruida esta ciudad?
18 Si en verdad ellos son profetas, y si la palabra del Señor los respalda, pídanle ahora al Señor de los ejércitos que los utensilios que han quedado en la casa del Señor, y en el palacio del rey de Judá y en Jerusalén, no sean llevados a Babilonia.
19 Porque el Señor de los ejércitos ha hablado acerca de las columnas, del estanque, de las bases y del resto de los utensilios que quedan en esta ciudad
20 y que no quitó Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia cuando se llevó de Jerusalén a Babilonia a Jeconías hijo de Joacín, rey de Judá, y a todos los nobles de Judá y de Jerusalén.
21 Esto es lo que dijo el Señor de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, acerca de los utensilios que quedaron en su templo, y en el palacio del rey de Judá y en Jerusalén:
22 «Serán llevados a Babilonia, y allí se quedarán hasta el día en que yo los visite. Después de eso, iré a buscarlos y los traeré a este lugar.»
