The King Asks Isaiah's Advice
(2 Kings 19.1-7)1 As soon as King Hezekiah heard their report, he tore his clothes in grief, put on sackcloth, and went to the Temple of the Lord. 2 He sent Eliakim, the official in charge of the palace, Shebna, the court secretary, and the senior priests to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz. They also were wearing sackcloth. 3 This is the message which he told them to give to Isaiah: “Today is a day of suffering; we are being punished and are in disgrace. We are like a woman who is ready to give birth, but is too weak to do it. 4 The Assyrian emperor has sent his chief official to insult the living God. May the Lord your God hear these insults and punish those who spoke them. So pray to God for those of our people who survive.”
5 When Isaiah received King Hezekiah's message, 6 he sent back this answer: “The Lord tells you not to let the Assyrians frighten you by their claims that he cannot save you. 7 The Lord will cause the emperor to hear a rumor that will make him go back to his own country, and the Lord will have him killed there.”
The Assyrians Send Another Threat
(2 Kings 19.8-19)8 The Assyrian official learned that the emperor had left Lachish and was fighting against the nearby city of Libnah; so he went there to consult him. 9 Word reached the Assyrians that the Egyptian army, led by King Tirhakah of Ethiopia, was coming to attack them. When the emperor heard this, he sent a letter to King Hezekiah 10 of Judah to tell him: “The god you are trusting in has told you that you will not fall into my hands, but don't let that deceive you. 11 You have heard what an Assyrian emperor does to any country he decides to destroy. Do you think that you can escape? 12 My ancestors destroyed the cities of Gozan, Haran, and Rezeph, and killed the people of Betheden who lived in Telassar, and none of their gods could save them. 13 Where are the kings of the cities of Hamath, Arpad, Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah?”
14 King Hezekiah took the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went to the Temple, placed the letter there in the presence of the Lord, 15 and prayed, 16 “Almighty Lord, God of Israel, seated above the winged creatures, you alone are God, ruling all the kingdoms of the world. You created the earth and the sky. 17 Now, Lord, hear us and look at what is happening to us. Listen to all the things that Sennacherib is saying to insult you, the living God. 18 We all know, Lord, that the emperors of Assyria have destroyed many nations, made their lands desolate, 19 and burned up their gods—which were no gods at all, only images of wood and stone made by human hands. 20 Now, Lord our God, rescue us from the Assyrians, so that all the nations of the world will know that you alone are God.”
Isaiah's Message to the King
(2 Kings 19.20-37)21 Then Isaiah sent a message telling King Hezekiah that in answer to the king's prayer 22 the Lord had said, “The city of Jerusalem laughs at you, Sennacherib, and makes fun of you. 23 Whom do you think you have been insulting and ridiculing? You have been disrespectful to me, the holy God of Israel. 24 You sent your servants to boast to me that with all your chariots you had conquered the highest mountains of Lebanon. You boasted that there you cut down the tallest cedars and the finest cypress trees, and that you reached the deepest parts of the forests. 25 You boasted that you dug wells and drank water in foreign lands, and that the feet of your soldiers tramped the Nile River dry.
26 “Have you never heard that I planned all this long ago? And now I have carried it out. I gave you the power to turn fortified cities into piles of rubble. 27 The people who lived there were powerless; they were frightened and stunned. They were like grass in a field or weeds growing on a roof when the hot east wind blasts them.
28 “But I know everything about you, what you do and where you go. I know how you rage against me. 29 I have received the report of that rage and that pride of yours, and now I will put a hook through your nose and a bit in your mouth and will take you back by the same road you came.”
30 Then Isaiah said to King Hezekiah, “Here is a sign of what will happen. This year and next you will have only wild grain to eat, but the following year you will be able to plant grain and harvest it, and plant vines and eat grapes. 31 Those in Judah who survive will flourish like plants that send roots deep into the ground and produce fruit. 32 There will be people in Jerusalem and on Mount Zion who will survive, because the Lord Almighty is determined to make this happen.
33 “And this is what the Lord has said about the Assyrian emperor: ‘He will not enter this city or shoot a single arrow against it. No soldiers with shields will come near the city, and no siege mounds will be built around it. 34 He will go back by the same road he came, without entering this city. I, the Lord, have spoken. 35 I will defend this city and protect it, for the sake of my own honor and because of the promise I made to my servant David.’”
36 An angel of the Lord went to the Assyrian camp and killed 185,000 soldiers. At dawn the next day there they lay, all dead! 37 Then the Assyrian emperor Sennacherib withdrew and returned to Nineveh. 38 One day when he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisroch, two of his sons, Adrammelech and Sharezer, killed him with their swords and then escaped to the land of Ararat. Another of his sons, Esarhaddon, succeeded him as emperor.
Judá es librado de Senaquerib
(2 R 19.1-372 Cr 32.20-23)1 Cuando el rey Ezequías oyó esto, se rasgó los vestidos y, cubierto de cilicio, fue a la casa del Señor.
2 Luego envió, también cubiertos de cilicio, al mayordomo Eliaquín, al escriba Sebna y a los ancianos de los sacerdotes, para que hablaran con el profeta Isaías hijo de Amoz
3 y le dijeran de su parte:
«Hoy es un día de angustia, de reprensión y de blasfemia, porque ha llegado la hora de dar a luz, y la parturienta no tiene fuerzas.
4 Tal vez el Señor tu Dios habrá oído las palabras del primer oficial, que su señor, el rey de Asiria, envió para blasfemar contra el Dios vivo, tu Señor y Dios, y para ofenderlo con sus palabras. Eleva, pues, una oración por el remanente que todavía queda.»
5 Los siervos de Ezequías fueron a hablar con Isaías,
6 y este les dijo:
«Digan a su señor el rey que así ha dicho Dios nuestro Señor: “No tengas miedo por las palabras que has oído, y con las cuales los siervos del rey de Asiria han blasfemado contra mí.
7 Yo voy a poner un espíritu en él, y haré que oiga un rumor y regrese a su país. Cuando llegue a su país, haré que muera a filo de espada.”»
8 El primer oficial se enteró de que el rey de Asiria se había apartado de Laquis. Entonces volvió a su país y se encontró con que el rey estaba combatiendo contra Libna.
9 Cuando se enteró de que Tiracá, el rey de Etiopía, había salido a combatirlo, envió embajadores a Ezequías con este mensaje:
10 «Digan a Ezequías, rey de Judá: “No te dejes engañar por tu Dios, en quien confías, ni creas que Jerusalén no caerá en manos del rey de Asiria.
11 Tú bien sabes lo que han hecho los reyes de Asiria a todos los países que han destruido. ¿Acaso crees que tú te librarás?
12 ¿Acaso los dioses de esas naciones que destruyeron mis antepasados libraron a Gozán, Jarán, Resef y a los hijos de Edén que habitaban en Telasar?
13 ¿Dónde están ahora los reyes de Jamat y de Arfad, y el rey de las ciudades de Sefarvayin, Hena y Guivá?”»
14 Ezequías recibió las cartas de mano de los embajadores, y las leyó; luego subió a la casa del Señor y extendió las cartas ante el Señor,
15 y elevó esta oración al Señor:
16 «Señor de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel,
que habitas entre los querubines:
solo tú eres Dios de todos los reinos de la tierra,
pues tú hiciste los cielos y la tierra.
17 Inclina, Señor, tu oído, y oye;
abre, Señor, tus ojos, y mira;
oye todas las blasfemias que contra ti, el Dios viviente,
ha mandado proferir Senaquerib.
18 Ciertamente, Señor, los reyes de Asiria
destruyeron todos los países y sus comarcas,
19 y echaron al fuego los dioses de ellos,
dioses que en realidad no eran dioses
sino hechuras humanas de madera y piedra;
¡por eso los destruyeron!
20 Señor y Dios nuestro,
líbranos ahora de caer en sus manos,
para que todos los reinos de la tierra
sepan que solo tú eres el Señor.»
21 Entonces Isaías hijo de Amoz mandó que dijeran a Ezequías:
«Así dice el Señor, Dios de Israel en cuanto a tus ruegos acerca de Senaquerib, el rey de Asiria.
22 Yo, el Señor, le digo a ese rey: “La virginal hija de Sión te menosprecia y te escarnece. A tus espaldas mueve la cabeza la hija de Jerusalén.”
23 »¿A quién vituperaste? ¿Contra quién has blasfemado? ¿Contra quién has levantado la voz, y puesto en alto los ojos? ¡Contra el Santo de Israel!
24 Por medio de tus siervos me has vituperado, al decir: “Con la multitud de mis carros subiré a las alturas de los montes y a las laderas del Líbano; derribaré sus altos cedros y sus mejores cipreses; llegaré hasta sus cumbres más elevadas y sus bosques más tupidos.
25 Yo he cavado pozos, y he bebido de sus aguas; con mis pies he pisoteado y secado todos los ríos de Egipto.”
26 »¿No has oído hablar de lo que yo hice desde los tiempos antiguos, ni de los planes que desde los días más remotos tengo pensado realizar? Pues ahora voy a realizarlos, y tú habrás de reducir las ciudades fortificadas a montones de escombros.
27 Sus habitantes, despojados de su poder, quedarán confusos y aterrorizados; serán como la hierba del campo y las verdes hortalizas; ¡serán como la paja sobre los techos, que antes de tiempo se seca!
28 »Yo conozco tu condición. Sé cuándo entras y cuándo sales, y sé también de tu furor contra mí.
29 Grande es tu furia contra mí. Estoy enterado de tu arrogancia. Por eso te pondré un gancho en la nariz, y un freno en los labios, y haré que regreses por el mismo camino por donde viniste.
30 »Y esto te servirá de señal: Este año y el siguiente comerán ustedes de lo que crezca por sí mismo, pero al tercer año ya podrán sembrar y segar, y plantarán viñas y comerán sus uvas.
31 Los habitantes de Judá que logren escapar y queden con vida volverán a echar raíces y a ser productivos.»
32 Ciertamente, de Jerusalén y del monte Sión saldrá un remanente que se salvará. Esto lo hará posible el gran amor del Señor de los ejércitos.
33 Por lo tanto, así dice el Señor:
«El rey de Asiria no entrará en esta ciudad, ni lanzará contra ella una sola flecha; tampoco avanzará contra ella con sus escudos, ni levantará contra ella ningún baluarte.
34 Por el mismo camino por el que vino, tendrá que volver. ¡No entrará en esta ciudad!
—Palabra del Señor.35 »Yo ampararé a esta ciudad y la pondré a salvo. Lo haré por mí mismo y por mi siervo David.»
36 El ángel del Señor salió entonces y mató a ciento ochenta y cinco mil hombres en el campamento de los asirios. Y al día siguiente, cuando se levantaron, todo el campamento estaba cubierto de cadáveres.
37 Entonces Senaquerib, el rey de Asiria, se fue de allí y se quedó a vivir en Nínive.
38 Pero sucedió que, mientras él adoraba en el templo de su dios Nisroc, sus hijos Adramelec y Sarezer lo mataron; le clavaron una espada, y luego huyeron a la tierra de Ararat. En su lugar reinó su hijo Esarjadón.
