Other Descendants of Abraham
(1 Chronicles 1.321 33)1 Abraham married another woman, whose name was Keturah. 2 She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. 3 Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan, and the descendants of Dedan were the Asshurim, the Letushim, and the Leummim. 4 The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were Keturah's descendants.
5 Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac; 6 but while he was still alive, he gave presents to the sons his other wives had borne him. Then he sent these sons to the land of the East, away from his son Isaac.
The Death and Burial of Abraham
7-8 Abraham died at the ripe old age of 175. 9 His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in Machpelah Cave, in the field east of Mamre that had belonged to Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite. 10 It was the field that Abraham had bought from the Hittites; both Abraham and his wife Sarah were buried there. 11 After the death of Abraham, God blessed his son Isaac, who lived near “The Well of the Living One Who Sees Me.”
The Descendants of Ishmael
(1 Chronicles 1.28-31)12 Ishmael, whom Hagar, the Egyptian slave of Sarah, bore to Abraham, 13 had the following sons, listed in the order of their birth: Nebaioth, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. 16 They were the ancestors of twelve tribes, and their names were given to their villages and camping places. 17 Ishmael was 137 years old when he died. 18 The descendants of Ishmael lived in the territory between Havilah and Shur, to the east of Egypt on the way to Assyria. They lived apart from the other descendants of Abraham.
The Birth of Esau and Jacob
19 This is the story of Abraham's son Isaac. 20 Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebecca, the daughter of Bethuel (an Aramean from Mesopotamia) and sister of Laban. 21 Because Rebecca had no children, Isaac prayed to the Lord for her. The Lord answered his prayer, and Rebecca became pregnant. 22 She was going to have twins, and before they were born, they struggled against each other in her womb. She said, “Why should something like this happen to me?” So she went to ask the Lord for an answer.
23 The Lord said to her,
“Two nations are within you;
You will give birth to two rival peoples.
One will be stronger than the other;
The older will serve the younger.”
24 The time came for her to give birth, and she had twin sons. 25 The first one was reddish, and his skin was like a hairy robe, so he was named Esau. 26 The second one was born holding on tightly to the heel of Esau, so he was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when they were born.
Esau Sells His Rights as the First-Born Son
27 The boys grew up, and Esau became a skilled hunter, a man who loved the outdoors, but Jacob was a quiet man who stayed at home. 28 Isaac preferred Esau, because he enjoyed eating the animals Esau killed, but Rebecca preferred Jacob.
29 One day while Jacob was cooking some bean soup, Esau came in from hunting. He was hungry 30 and said to Jacob, “I'm starving; give me some of that red stuff.” (That is why he was named Edom. )
31 Jacob answered, “I will give it to you if you give me your rights as the first-born son.”
32 Esau said, “All right! I am about to die; what good will my rights do me?”
33 Jacob answered, “First make a vow that you will give me your rights.”
Esau made the vow and gave his rights to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave him some bread and some of the soup. He ate and drank and then got up and left. That was all Esau cared about his rights as the first-born son.
Los descendientes de Abrahán y Cetura
(1 Cr 1.32-33)1 Abrahán tomó otra mujer, cuyo nombre era Cetura.
2 Esta le dio a luz a Zimram, Jocsán, Medán, Madián, Isbac y Súaj.
3 Jocsán engendró a Sebá y a Dedán. Los hijos de Dedán fueron Asurim, Letusim y Leumim.
4 Los hijos de Madián fueron Efa, Efer, Janoc, Abidá y Eldá. Todos estos fueron hijos de Cetura.
5 Y Abrahán le dio a Isaac todo cuanto tenía.
6 A los hijos de sus concubinas, Abrahán les dio regalos mientras todavía vivía, y los envió hacia el oriente, a la tierra oriental, lejos de su hijo Isaac.
Muerte y sepultura de Abrahán
7 Abrahán llegó a vivir ciento setenta y cinco años,
8 y murió en buena vejez, anciano y lleno de años. Exhaló el espíritu, y fue reunido a su pueblo.
9 Sus hijos Isaac e Ismael lo sepultaron en la cueva de Macpela, que fue heredad de Efrón hijo de Sojar, el hitita, y que está frente a Mamre.
10 Esa heredad la compró Abrahán de los hititas, y allí fueron sepultados Abrahán y Sara, su mujer.
11 Después de la muerte de Abrahán, Dios bendijo a su hijo Isaac, y este se quedó a vivir junto al pozo «El que vive y me ve».
Los descendientes de Ismael
(1 Cr 1.28-31)12 Estos son los descendientes de Ismael, el hijo que Abrahán tuvo con Agar la egipcia, sierva de Sara.
13 Los nombres de los hijos de Ismael, nombrados por orden de nacimiento, fueron: Nebayot, primogénito de Ismael; le siguieron Cedar, Adbel, Mibsán,
14 Misma, Duma, Massa,
15 Hadar, Tema, Jetur, Nafís y Quedemá.
16 Estos son los hijos de Ismael, y sus nombres, en el orden de sus villas y campamentos: doce príncipes de sus pueblos.
17 Ismael llegó a vivir ciento treinta y siete años. Después de eso exhaló el espíritu y murió, y fue reunido a su pueblo.
18 Murió en presencia de todos sus hermanos. Y los ismaelitas se asentaron desde Javilá hasta Shur, que cuando se viene de Asiria queda frente a Egipto.
Nacimiento de Jacob y Esaú
19 Estos son los descendientes de Isaac, hijo de Abrahán: Abrahán engendró a Isaac.
20 Isaac tenía cuarenta años cuando tomó por mujer a Rebeca, hija de Betuel, el arameo de Padán Aram, y hermana de Labán el arameo.
21 Isaac rogó al Señor por Rebeca, su mujer, porque era estéril; y el Señor escuchó sus ruegos, y ella concibió.
22 Pero los hijos luchaban dentro de ella, así que ella dijo:
«Si esto es así, ¿para qué estoy aquí?»
Fue entonces a consultar al Señor;
23 y el Señor le respondió:
«En tu seno hay dos naciones.
Dos pueblos serán divididos desde tus entrañas;
un pueblo será más fuerte que el otro,
y el mayor servirá al menor.»
24 Cuando se cumplieron sus días para que diera a luz, resultó que en su vientre había gemelos.
25 El primero en salir era rubio y todo velludo; y le pusieron por nombre Esaú.
26 Después salió su hermano, con la mano aferrada al talón de Esaú; y le pusieron por nombre Jacob. Isaac tenía sesenta años de edad cuando ella los dio a luz.
Esaú vende su primogenitura
27 Los niños crecieron, y Esaú fue un hombre de campo y un cazador experto; pero Jacob era un hombre tranquilo, que habitaba en tiendas.
28 Isaac amaba a Esaú, porque comía de lo que cazaba; pero Rebeca amaba a Jacob.
29 Cierto día, Jacob preparó un guiso, y Esaú, que volvía del campo, cansado,
30 le dijo a Jacob:
«Por favor, dame a comer de ese guiso rojo, que estoy muy cansado.»
Por eso fue llamado Edom.
31 Y Jacob le respondió:
«Pues véndeme hoy tu primogenitura.»
32 Esaú dijo:
«¿Y para qué me sirve la primogenitura, si estoy a punto de morir?»
33 Jacob le dijo:
«Pues júramelo hoy mismo.»
Y Esaú le hizo un juramento a Jacob, y le vendió su primogenitura.
34 Entonces Jacob le dio a Esaú pan y el guiso de lentejas, y Esaú comió y bebió; luego se levantó y se fue. Así fue como Esaú menospreció la primogenitura.
