Jerusalem the Unfaithful
1 The Lord spoke to me again. 2 “Mortal man,” he said, “point out to Jerusalem what disgusting things she has done. 3 Tell Jerusalem what the Sovereign Lord is saying to her:
“You were born in the land of Canaan. Your father was an Amorite, and your mother was a Hittite. 4 When you were born, no one cut your umbilical cord or washed you or rubbed you with salt or wrapped you in cloths. 5 No one took enough pity on you to do any of these things for you. When you were born, no one loved you. You were thrown out in an open field.
6 “Then I passed by and saw you squirming in your own blood. You were covered with blood, but I wouldn't let you die. 7 I made you grow like a healthy plant. You grew strong and tall and became a young woman. Your breasts were well-formed, and your hair had grown, but you were naked.
8 “As I passed by again, I saw that the time had come for you to fall in love. I covered your naked body with my coat and promised to love you. Yes, I made a marriage covenant with you, and you became mine.” This is what the Sovereign Lord says.
9 “Then I took water and washed the blood off you. I rubbed olive oil on your skin. 10 I dressed you in embroidered gowns and gave you shoes of the best leather, a linen headband, and a silk cloak. 11 I put jewels on you—bracelets and necklaces. 12 I gave you a nose ring and earrings and a beautiful crown to wear. 13 You had ornaments of gold and silver, and you always wore clothes of embroidered linen and silk. You ate bread made from the best flour, and had honey and olive oil to eat. Your beauty was dazzling, and you became a queen. 14 You became famous in every nation for your perfect beauty, because I was the one who made you so lovely.” This is what the Sovereign Lord says.
15 “But you took advantage of your beauty and fame to sleep with everyone who came along. 16 You used some of your clothes to decorate your places of worship, and just like a prostitute, you gave yourself to everyone. 17 You took the silver and gold jewelry that I had given you, used it to make male images, and committed adultery with them. 18 You took the embroidered clothes I gave you and put them on the images, and you offered to the images the olive oil and incense I had given you. 19 I gave you food—the best flour, olive oil, and honey—but you offered it as a sacrifice to win the favor of idols.” This is what the Sovereign Lord says.
20 “Then you took the sons and the daughters you had borne me and offered them as sacrifices to idols. Wasn't it bad enough to be unfaithful to me, 21 without taking my children and sacrificing them to idols? 22 During your disgusting life as a prostitute you never once remembered your childhood—when you were naked, squirming in your own blood.”
Jerusalem's Life as a Prostitute
23 The Sovereign Lord said, “You are doomed! Doomed! You did all that evil, and then 24 by the side of every road you built places to worship idols and practice prostitution. 25 You dragged your beauty through the mud. You offered yourself to everyone who came by, and you were more of a prostitute every day. 26 You let your lustful neighbors, the Egyptians, go to bed with you, and you used your prostitution to make me angry.
27 “Now I have raised my hand to punish you and to take away your share of my blessing. I have handed you over to the Philistines, who hate you and are disgusted with your immoral actions.
28 “Because you were not satisfied by the others, you went running after the Assyrians. You were their prostitute, but they didn't satisfy you either. 29 You were also a prostitute for the Babylonians, that nation of merchants, but they didn't satisfy you either.”
30 This is what the Sovereign Lord is saying: “You have done all this like a shameless prostitute. 31 On every street you built places to worship idols and practice prostitution. But you are not out for money like a common prostitute. 32 You are like a woman who commits adultery with strangers instead of loving her husband. 33 A prostitute is paid, but you gave presents to all your lovers and bribed them to come from everywhere to sleep with you. 34 You are a special kind of prostitute. No one forced you to become one. You didn't get paid; you paid them! Yes, you are different.”
God's Judgment on Jerusalem
35 Now then, Jerusalem, you whore! Hear what the Lord is saying.
36 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “You stripped off your clothes, and like a prostitute, you gave yourself to your lovers and to all your disgusting idols, and you killed your children as sacrifices to idols. 37 Because of this I will bring all your former lovers together—the ones you liked and the ones you hated. I will bring them around you in a circle, and then I will strip off your clothes and let them see you naked. 38 I will condemn you for adultery and murder, and in my anger and fury I will punish you with death. 39 I will put you in their power, and they will tear down the places where you engage in prostitution and worship idols. They will take away your clothes and jewels and leave you completely naked.
40 “They will stir up a crowd to stone you, and they will cut you to pieces with their swords. 41 They will burn your houses down and let crowds of women see your punishment. I will make you stop being a prostitute and make you stop giving gifts to your lovers. 42 Then my anger will be over, and I will be calm. I will not be angry or jealous any more. 43 You have forgotten how I treated you when you were young, and you have made me angry by all the things you did. That is why I have made you pay for them all. Why did you add sexual immorality to all the other disgusting things you did?” The Sovereign Lord has spoken.
Like Mother, Like Daughter
44 The Lord said, “People will use this proverb about you, Jerusalem: ‘Like mother, like daughter.’ 45 You really are your mother's daughter. She detested her husband and her children. You are like your sisters, who hated their husbands and their children. You and your sister cities had a Hittite mother and an Amorite father.
46 “Your older sister, with her villages, is Samaria, in the north. Your younger sister, with her villages, is Sodom, in the south. 47 Were you satisfied to follow in their footsteps and copy their disgusting actions? No, in only a little while you were acting worse than they were in everything you did.
48 “As surely as I am the living God,” the Sovereign Lord says, “your sister Sodom and her villages never did the evil that you and your villages have done. 49 She and her daughters were proud because they had plenty to eat and lived in peace and quiet, but they did not take care of the poor and the underprivileged. 50 They were proud and stubborn and did the things that I hate, so I destroyed them, as you well know.
51 “Samaria did not sin half as much as you have. You have acted more disgustingly than she ever did. Your corruption makes your sisters look innocent by comparison. 52 And now you will have to endure your disgrace. Your sins are so much worse than those of your sisters that they look innocent beside you. Now blush and bear your shame, because you make your sisters look pure.”
Sodom and Samaria Will Be Restored
53 The Lord said to Jerusalem, “I will make them prosperous again—Sodom and her villages and Samaria and her villages. Yes, I will make you prosperous too. 54 You will be ashamed of yourself, and your disgrace will show your sisters how well-off they are. 55 They will become prosperous again, and you and your villages will also be restored. 56 Didn't you joke about Sodom in those days when you were proud 57 and before the evil you did had been exposed? Now you are just like her—a joke to the Edomites, the Philistines, and your other neighbors who hate you. 58 You must suffer for the obscene, disgusting things you have done.” The Lord has spoken.
A Covenant That Lasts Forever
59 The Sovereign Lord says, “I will treat you the way you deserve, because you ignored your promises and broke the covenant. 60 But I will honor the covenant I made with you when you were young, and I will make a covenant with you that will last forever. 61 You will remember how you have acted, and be ashamed of it when you get your older sister and your younger sister back. I will let them be like daughters to you, even though this was not part of my covenant with you. 62 I will renew my covenant with you, and you will know that I am the Lord. 63 I will forgive all the wrongs you have done, but you will remember them and be too ashamed to open your mouth.” The Sovereign Lord has spoken.

2 «Hijo de hombre, hazle saber a Jerusalén que sus hechos son repugnantes.
3 Dile que así ha dicho el Señor su Dios: “Tú, Jerusalén, eres desde tu origen cananea de nacimiento. Tu padre era un amorreo, y tu madre una hitita.
4 El día en que naciste no te cortaron el ombligo, ni te bañaron ni te limpiaron con agua, ni te frotaron con sal, ni te envolvieron ni te fajaron.
5 Ninguno de los que te vieron nacer se compadeció de ti ni hizo nada por ti. Al contrario, tan pronto como naciste te arrojaron a la intemperie, sin que les importara si sobrevivirías.
6 »”Yo pasé junto a ti y, al verte tan sucia y llena de sangre, te dije: ‘¡Estás viva!’ Sí, todavía estabas llena de sangre cuando volví a decirte: ‘¡Estás viva!’
7 Entonces hice que te reprodujeras como la hierba del campo. Y tú creciste y te hiciste grande, y llegaste a ser muy hermosa; tus pechos se desarrollaron, y te creció el vello; pero tú seguías desnuda por completo.
8 »”Yo volví a pasar junto a ti, y te miré, y ya estabas en la edad de enamorarte. Entonces extendí mi manto sobre ti, y cubrí tu desnudez, y te hice un juramento y establecí un pacto contigo, y fuiste mía.
—Palabra de Dios el Señor.9 »”Te lavé con agua, te limpié la sangre que te cubría, y te unté bálsamo.
10 También te cubrí con un bordado, te puse las sandalias más finas, y te vestí con telas de lino y de seda.
11 Luego te adorné con alhajas, y te puse brazaletes en los brazos y collares en el cuello.
12 Te puse joyas en la nariz, y aretes en las orejas, y en la cabeza te puse una bella diadema.
13 Quedaste adornada de oro y de plata, y tu vestido era de finos bordados de lino y de seda; te alimentaste con flor de harina, miel y aceite; fuiste extremadamente embellecida, y hasta llegaste a ser reina.
14 La fama de tu belleza se extendió por todas las naciones. Eras una belleza perfecta, porque yo te embellecí.
—Palabra de Dios el Señor.15 »”Pero confiaste en tu hermosura, y tu fama te llevó a prostituirte. Te entregaste a todo el que pasaba, y le brindaste tus favores.
16 Con tus propios vestidos hiciste altares paganos, y allí te prostituiste. ¡Nunca antes había sucedido algo así, ni jamás sucederá!
17 Tomaste las alhajas de oro y plata que yo te había regalado, y con ellas te hiciste figuras masculinas para serme infiel.
18 Además, las arropaste con tus finos vestidos de brocado, y les ofreciste el aceite y el incienso que eran para mí.
19 También les presentaste, como ofrenda de grato aroma, el pan y la flor de harina, y el aceite y la miel, que yo te di como alimento. Eso es un hecho.
—Palabra de Dios el Señor.20 »”¿Se te hace poco haberte prostituido tanto, que tomaste a los hijos y a las hijas que tuviste conmigo para ofrecerlos a esos ídolos como alimento?
21 ¡Sacrificaste a mis hijos! ¡Los entregaste a esos ídolos para que el fuego los consumiera!
22 Todos tus hechos repugnantes, y todas tus infidelidades te han hecho olvidar los días de tu juventud, cuando estabas del todo desnuda, ¡cuando estabas toda llena de sangre!
23 ¡Ay de ti, ay de ti!
—Palabra de Dios el Señor.»”Y resulta que, después de toda tu maldad,
24 edificaste lugares altos y levantaste altares en todas las plazas.
25 A la entrada de todo camino edificaste lugares altos, y rebajaste tu hermosura al ofrecerte a todo el que pasaba por allí, con lo que aumentaste tus infidelidades.
26 Tuviste amoríos con los egipcios, tus vecinos de gran potencia viril, y para hacerme enojar te prostituiste más y más.
27 Por eso yo descargué mi mano sobre ti y te reduje tu provisión ordinaria, y te entregué a la voluntad de las hijas de los filisteos, que te aborrecían y se avergonzaban de tu malvado proceder.
28 Tan insaciable eres que también tuviste amoríos con los asirios, pero tampoco con ellos quedaste satisfecha.
29 Tanto en Canaán como en Babilonia aumentaste tus prostituciones, ¡y tampoco quedaste satisfecha!
30 Tienes un corazón inestable. ¡Todos tus actos solo son propios de una ramera desvergonzada!
—Palabra de Dios el Señor.31 »”A la entrada de todo camino edificaste tus lugares altos, y en todas las plazas pusiste tus altares. Solo en algo no te portaste como ramera: ¡en que no te importaba la paga!
32 Mujer infiel, relegaste a tu esposo por atrapar a otros hombres.
33 Toda ramera recibe una paga, ¡pero tú les pagabas a tus amantes! Les dabas presentes para que de todas partes vinieran a prostituirse contigo.
34 Contigo sucedió lo contrario de lo que hacen otras mujeres: como nadie te pedía acostarse contigo, eras tú quien se ofrecía, y quien pagaba, en vez de que le pagaran. ¡En eso fuiste diferente!
35 »”Por lo tanto, ramera, oye lo que voy a decirte.
36 Yo, tu Señor y Dios, te digo: ‘Puesto que tú has dejado al descubierto tu desnudez con tus prostituciones, y te has exhibido ante tus amantes y ante tus repugnantes ídolos, a los que has ofrendado la sangre de tus hijos,
37 yo voy a convocar a todos tus amantes, con los que te regocijaste y tuviste placer, y también a todos los que aborreciste, y los reuniré alrededor de ti para exhibir tu desnudez. ¡Que te vean tal y como eres!
38 Voy a aplicarte la ley que castiga a las adúlteras y a las asesinas. Voy a volcar sobre ti mi ira y mis celos.
39 Voy a entregarte en manos de tus amantes, para que destruyan tus lugares altos y derriben tus altares, para que te despojen de tus vestidos y de tus alhajas, y te dejen completamente desnuda.
40 Ellos te atacarán con una gran muchedumbre, y te apedrearán y despedazarán con sus espadas.
41 Prenderán fuego a tus casas, y en presencia de muchas mujeres dictarán sentencia contra ti, para que dejes de prostituirte y no vuelvas a prodigar tus favores.
42 Así apaciguaré mi enojo y mis celos por ti, y una vez calmado no volveré a enojarme.
43 La verdad es que tú provocaste mi enojo con todo lo que hiciste; no te acordaste de cuando eras joven, ni pensaste siquiera en tu infame lujuria. Por eso voy a descargar sobre ti las consecuencias de tu conducta.’”
—Palabra de Dios el Señor.44 »Todos los que hablan con refranes van a aplicarte aquel que dice: “De tal madre, tal hija.”
45 Y es que tú eres hija de la madre que desechó a su marido y a sus hijos; también eres hermana de las hermanas que desecharon a sus maridos y a sus hijos. La madre de ustedes fue una hitita, y el padre de ustedes fue un amorreo.
46 Tu hermana mayor es Samaria, y ella y sus hijas habitaron al norte de tu territorio. Tu hermana menor es Sodoma, y ella y sus hijas habitaron al sur de tu territorio.
47 Pero tú no solo imitaste su conducta y cometiste los mismos actos repugnantes, sino que eso te pareció poco y tus hechos fueron peores que los de ellas.
48 Puedo jurar por mí mismo, que ni tu hermana Sodoma ni sus hijas hicieron lo que hicieron tú y tus hijas.
—Palabra de Dios el Señor.49 »Tu hermana Sodoma y sus hijas pecaron de soberbias. Era tanto el pan que tenían, y tanto el tiempo que les sobraba, que no se ocuparon de dar fuerzas a los pobres y menesterosos.
50 Se llenaron de soberbia y, ante mis ojos, cometieron actos repugnantes; por eso decidí destruirlas.
51 Sin embargo, ni Samaria ni sus hijas cometieron la mitad de tus pecados. Comparadas contigo, ellas resultan más justas, pues tus hechos repugnantes fueron más que los que ellas cometieron.
52 Y ya que juzgaste a tus hermanas, carga ahora con la vergüenza de los pecados que cometiste, y que son más abominables que los que ellas cometieron. Carga con esa vergüenza y confusión, pues ellas han resultado ser más justas que tú. ¡Tú las has justificado!
53 »Yo voy a hacer que vuelvan los cautivos de Sodoma y de sus hijas, y los cautivos de Samaria y de sus hijas, y también haré que vuelvan tus cautivos,
54 para que cargues con esa confusión y esa vergüenza, por todo lo que has hecho. Eso les servirá de consuelo.
55 Tus hermanas Sodoma y Samaria volverán a ser lo que antes fueron, lo mismo que sus hijas, y también tú y tus hijas volverán a ser lo que antes fueron.
56 En tus tiempos de grandeza, no considerabas a tu hermana Sodoma digna de que la mencionaras.
57 Pero eso fue antes de que tu maldad quedara al descubierto. Así que ahora te toca soportar las ofensas de las hijas de Siria y de todas las hijas de los filisteos, que por todos lados te desprecian.
58 ¡Te toca cargar con el castigo de tu lujuria y de tus hechos repugnantes!»
—Palabra del Señor.59 Pero Dios el Señor ha dicho algo más:
«¿Acaso yo voy a hacer contigo lo mismo que tú hiciste, de menospreciar el juramento para invalidar el pacto?
60 No, porque yo sí me acuerdo del pacto que hice contigo cuando aún eras joven, así que estableceré contigo un pacto sempiterno.
61 Tú te acordarás de tu mala conducta, y sentirás vergüenza, cuando recibas a tus hermanas mayores y menores, a las que te daré por hijas, aunque no participarán de mi pacto contigo.
62 Mi pacto lo confirmaré contigo. Así sabrás que yo soy el Señor.
63 Cuando yo te perdone por todo lo que hiciste, tú te acordarás y te avergonzarás, y tal será tu vergüenza que nunca más volverás a abrir la boca.»
