The Second Set of Stone Tablets
(Deuteronomy 10.1-5)1 The Lord said to Moses, “Cut two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. 2 Get ready tomorrow morning, and come up Mount Sinai to meet me there at the top. 3 No one is to come up with you; no one is to be seen on any part of the mountain; and no sheep or cattle are to graze at the foot of the mountain.” 4 So Moses cut two more stone tablets, and early the next morning he carried them up Mount Sinai, just as the Lord had commanded.
5 The Lord came down in a cloud, stood with him there, and pronounced his holy name, the Lord. 6 The Lord then passed in front of him and called out, “I, the Lord, am a God who is full of compassion and pity, who is not easily angered and who shows great love and faithfulness. 7 I keep my promise for thousands of generations and forgive evil and sin; but I will not fail to punish children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generation for the sins of their parents.”
8 Moses quickly bowed down to the ground and worshiped. 9 He said, “Lord, if you really are pleased with me, I ask you to go with us. These people are stubborn, but forgive our evil and our sin, and accept us as your own people.”
The Covenant Is Renewed
(Exodus 23.14-19Deuteronomy 7.1-5Deuteronomy 16.1-17)10 The Lord said to Moses, “I now make a covenant with the people of Israel. In their presence I will do great things such as have never been done anywhere on earth among any of the nations. All the people will see what great things I, the Lord, can do, because I am going to do an awesome thing for you. 11 Obey the laws that I am giving you today. I will drive out the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, as you advance. 12 Do not make any treaties with the people of the country into which you are going, because this could be a fatal trap for you. 13 Instead, tear down their altars, destroy their sacred pillars, and cut down their symbols of the goddess Asherah.
14 “Do not worship any other god, because I, the Lord, tolerate no rivals. 15 Do not make any treaties with the people of the country, because when they worship their pagan gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you to join them, and you will be tempted to eat the food they offer to their gods. 16 Your sons might marry those foreign women, who would lead them to be unfaithful to me and to worship their pagan gods.
17 “Do not make gods of metal and worship them.
18 “Keep the Festival of Unleavened Bread. As I have commanded you, eat unleavened bread for seven days in the month of Abib, because it was in that month that you left Egypt.
19 “Every first-born son and first-born male domestic animal belongs to me, 20 but you are to buy back every first-born donkey by offering a lamb in its place. If you do not buy it back, break its neck. Buy back every first-born son.
“No one is to appear before me without an offering.
21 “You have six days in which to do your work, but do not work on the seventh day, not even during plowing time or harvest.
22 “Keep the Harvest Festival when you begin to harvest the first crop of your wheat, and keep the Festival of Shelters in the autumn when you gather your fruit.
23 “Three times a year all of your men must come to worship me, the Lord, the God of Israel. 24 After I have driven out the nations before you and extended your territory, no one will try to conquer your country during the three festivals.
25 “Do not offer bread made with yeast when you sacrifice an animal to me. Do not keep until the following morning any part of the animal killed at the Passover Festival.
26 “Each year bring to the house of the Lord the first grain that you harvest.
“Do not cook a young sheep or goat in its mother's milk.”
27 The Lord said to Moses, “Write these words down, because it is on the basis of these words that I am making a covenant with you and with Israel.” 28 Moses stayed there with the Lord forty days and nights, eating and drinking nothing. He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments.
Moses Goes Down from Mount Sinai
29 When Moses went down from Mount Sinai carrying the Ten Commandments, his face was shining because he had been speaking with the Lord; but he did not know it. 30 Aaron and all the people looked at Moses and saw that his face was shining, and they were afraid to go near him. 31 But Moses called them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the community went to him, and Moses spoke with them. 32 After that, all the people of Israel gathered around him, and Moses gave them all the laws that the Lord had given him on Mount Sinai. 33 When Moses had finished speaking with them, he covered his face with a veil. 34 Whenever Moses went into the Tent of the Lord's presence to speak to the Lord, he would take the veil off. When he came out, he would tell the people of Israel everything that he had been commanded to say, 35 and they would see that his face was shining. Then he would put the veil back on until the next time he went to speak with the Lord.
El pacto renovado
(Dt 10.1-5)1 El Señor le dijo a Moisés:
«Pule dos tablas de piedra, como las primeras, y yo escribiré sobre esas tablas las palabras que estaban en las primeras tablas, las que hiciste pedazos.
2 Así que prepárate para mañana, y sube temprano al monte Sinaí. Preséntate ante mí en la cumbre del monte.
3 Que no suba nadie contigo, ni se asome nadie en todo el monte. Tampoco debe haber ovejas ni bueyes paciendo delante del monte.»
4 Moisés pulió dos tablas de piedra, como las primeras, y por la mañana se levantó y subió al monte Sinaí, tal y como el Señor se lo ordenó. En sus manos llevaba las dos tablas de piedra.
5 Y el Señor descendió en la nube, y estuvo allí con él, proclamando su nombre.
6 Luego el Señor pasó delante de Moisés, y proclamó:
«¡EL SEÑOR! ¡EL SEÑOR! ¡Dios misericordioso y clemente! ¡Lento para la ira, y grande en misericordia y verdad!
7 ¡Es misericordioso por mil generaciones! ¡Perdona la maldad, la rebelión y el pecado, pero de ningún modo declara inocente al malvado! ¡Castiga la maldad de los padres en los hijos y en los hijos de los hijos, hasta la tercera y cuarta generación!»
8 Con gran rapidez Moisés bajó la cabeza hacia el suelo, y adoró.
9 Luego dijo:
«Señor, si me he ganado tu favor, quédate en medio de nosotros. Este es un pueblo de dura cerviz, así que perdona nuestra maldad y nuestro pecado, ¡y recíbenos como tu pueblo!»
10 El Señor contestó:
«Mira, yo hago un pacto delante de todo tu pueblo. Voy a realizar maravillas nunca antes vistas en toda la tierra, ni en nación alguna. Todo el pueblo, en medio del cual tú estás, verá las obras tan sorprendentes que yo, el Señor, haré contigo.
Advertencia contra la idolatría de Canaán
(Dt 7.1-5)11 »Tú cumple lo que hoy te mando. Verás que voy a echar de tu presencia a los amorreos y cananeos, y a los hititas, ferezeos, jivitas y jebuseos.
12 Pero ten cuidado. No hagas alianzas con los habitantes de la tierra a la que vas a entrar, para que no te sean un tropiezo.
13 Ustedes derribarán sus altares y harán pedazos sus estatuas y sus imágenes de Asera.
14 De ninguna manera te inclinarás ante ningún otro dios, porque yo, el Señor, soy un Dios celoso. Mi nombre es “Dios celoso”.
15 Por lo tanto, no harás alianza con los habitantes de esa tierra, porque ustedes podrían prostituirse al ir en pos de sus dioses, y entonces ofrecerán sacrificios a sus dioses, y los invitarán a comer de sus sacrificios,
16 o casarán a sus hijas con tus hijos, y al prostituirse sus hijas por seguir a sus dioses, harán que también tus hijos se prostituyan al seguir a los dioses de ellas.
17 »No te harás dioses de metal fundido.
Fiestas anuales
(Ex 23.14-19Dt 16.1-17)18 »Celebrarás la fiesta de los panes sin levadura. Comerás pan sin levadura durante siete días, como te lo he ordenado, en el tiempo señalado del mes de Aviv; porque fue en ese mes de Aviv cuando saliste de Egipto.
19 »Todo primogénito me pertenece, lo mismo que toda primera cría de tu ganado, sea de vaca o de oveja, siempre y cuando sea macho.
20 A la primera cría del asno la redimirás con un cordero; pero, si no lo redimes, le romperás el cuello.
»Rescatarás a todos tus hijos primogénitos. Y nadie debe presentarse ante mí con las manos vacías.
21 »Seis días trabajarás, pero el séptimo día descansarás. Aun si debieras arar o segar, descansarás.
22 »Celebrarás también la fiesta de las semanas, la fiesta de las primicias de la siega del trigo, y la fiesta de la cosecha al terminar el año.
23 Tres veces al año se presentarán todos tus varones delante de mí, tu Señor y Dios, el Dios de Israel.
24 Porque yo arrojaré de tu presencia a las naciones, y ensancharé tu territorio, y cuando subas a presentarte ante mí, el Señor tu Dios, tres veces al año, nadie codiciará tu tierra.
25 »No ofrecerás con la sangre de mi sacrificio nada que tenga levadura. Tampoco se dejará hasta el día siguiente nada del animal sacrificado en la fiesta de la pascua.
26 »Llevarás a la casa del Señor tu Dios los primeros frutos de tu tierra.
»No guisarás el cabrito en la leche de su madre.»
Moisés y las tablas de la ley
27 El Señor le dijo a Moisés:
«Pon estas palabras por escrito, porque el pacto que he hecho contigo y con Israel tiene como base estas palabras.»
28 Y Moisés estuvo allí, con el Señor, cuarenta días y cuarenta noches. No comió pan, ni bebió agua, pero sí escribió en las tablas de piedra las palabras del pacto, es decir, los diez mandamientos.
29 Y sucedió que, cuando Moisés bajó del monte Sinaí con las dos tablas del testimonio en su mano, no sabía que, después de haber hablado con Dios, la tez de su rostro resplandecía.
30 Aarón y todos los hijos de Israel miraron a Moisés, y vieron que la piel de su rostro resplandecía, así que tuvieron miedo de acercarse a él.
31 Pero Moisés los llamó, y cuando Aarón y todos los príncipes de la congregación regresaron, Moisés les habló.
32 Después se acercaron todos los hijos de Israel, y Moisés les ordenó cumplir con todo lo que el Señor le había dicho en el monte Sinaí.
33 Y cuando Moisés terminó de hablar con ellos, se puso un velo sobre el rostro.
34 Cuando Moisés se presentaba ante el Señor para hablar con él, se quitaba el velo mientras estaba adentro, y al salir les comunicaba a los hijos de Israel lo que el Señor le había ordenado.
35 Al mirar los hijos de Israel el rostro de Moisés, veían que la piel de su rostro resplandecía; pero Moisés volvía a cubrir su rostro con un velo, hasta que entraba de nuevo a hablar con Dios.
