1 we finally turned and went into the desert, on the road to the Gulf of Aqaba, as the Lord had commanded, and we spent a long time wandering about in the hill country of Edom.
2 “Then the Lord told me 3 that we had spent enough time wandering about in those hills and that we should go north. 4 He told me to give you the following instructions: ‘You are about to go through the hill country of Edom, the territory of your distant relatives, the descendants of Esau. They will be afraid of you, 5 but you must not start a war with them, because I am not going to give you so much as a square foot of their land. I have given Edom to Esau's descendants. 6 You may buy food and water from them.’
7 “Remember how the Lord your God has blessed you in everything that you have done. He has taken care of you as you wandered through this vast desert. He has been with you these forty years, and you have had everything you needed.
8 “So we moved on and left the road that goes from the towns of Elath and Eziongeber to the Dead Sea, and we turned northeast toward Moab. 9 The Lord said to me, ‘Don't trouble the people of Moab, the descendants of Lot, or start a war against them. I have given them the city of Ar, and I am not going to give you any of their land.’”
( 10 A mighty race of giants called the Emim used to live in Ar. They were as tall as the Anakim, another race of giants. 11 Like the Anakim they were also known as Rephaim; but the Moabites called them Emim. 12 The Horites used to live in Edom, but the descendants of Esau chased them out, destroyed their nation, and settled there themselves, just as the Israelites later chased their enemies out of the land that the Lord gave them.)
13 “Then we crossed the Zered River as the Lord told us to do. 14 This was thirty-eight years after we had left Kadesh Barnea. All the fighting men of that generation had died, as the Lord had said they would. 15 The Lord kept on opposing them until he had destroyed them all.
16 “After they had all died, 17 the Lord said to us, 18 ‘Today you are to pass through the territory of Moab by way of Ar. 19 You will then be near the land of the Ammonites, the descendants of Lot. Don't trouble them or start a war against them, because I am not going to give you any of the land that I have given them.’”
( 20 This territory is also known as the land of the Rephaim, the name of the people who used to live there; the Ammonites called them Zamzummim. 21 They were as tall as the Anakim. There were many of them, and they were a mighty race. But the Lord destroyed them, so that the Ammonites took over their land and settled there. 22 The Lord had done the same thing for the Edomites, the descendants of Esau, who live in the hill country of Edom. He destroyed the Horites, so that the Edomites took over their land and settled there, where they still live. 23 The land along the Mediterranean coast had been settled by people from the island of Crete. They had destroyed the Avvim, the original inhabitants, and had taken over all their land as far south as the city of Gaza.)
24 “After we had passed through Moab, the Lord told us, ‘Now, start out and cross the Arnon River. I am placing in your power Sihon, the Amorite king of Heshbon, along with his land. Attack him, and begin occupying his land. 25 From today on I will make people everywhere afraid of you. Everyone will tremble with fear at the mention of your name.’
Israel Defeats King Sihon
(Numbers 21.21-30)26 “Then I sent messengers from the desert of Kedemoth to King Sihon of Heshbon with the following offer of peace: 27 ‘Let us pass through your country. We will go straight through and not leave the road. 28 We will pay for the food we eat and the water we drink. All we want to do is to pass through your country, 29 until we cross the Jordan River into the land that the Lord our God is giving us. The descendants of Esau, who live in Edom, and the Moabites, who live in Ar, allowed us to pass through their territory.’
30 “But King Sihon would not let us pass through his country. The Lord your God had made him stubborn and rebellious, so that we could defeat him and take his territory, which we still occupy.
31 “Then the Lord said to me, ‘Look, I have made King Sihon and his land helpless before you; take his land and occupy it.’ 32 Sihon came out with all his men to fight us near the town of Jahaz, 33 but the Lord our God put him in our power, and we killed him, his sons, and all his men. 34 At the same time we captured and destroyed every town, and put everyone to death, men, women, and children. We left no survivors. 35 We took the livestock and plundered the towns. 36 The Lord our God let us capture all the towns from Aroer, on the edge of the Arnon Valley, and the city in the middle of that valley, all the way to Gilead. No town had walls too strong for us. 37 But we did not go near the territory of the Ammonites or to the banks of the Jabbok River or to the towns of the hill country or to any other place where the Lord our God had commanded us not to go.
Los años en el desierto
1 »De allí partimos en dirección al desierto, por el camino del Mar Rojo, tal y como el Señor me lo había dicho, y durante mucho tiempo rodeamos el monte de Seír.
2 Entonces el Señor habló conmigo, y me dijo:
3 “Ustedes ya han rodeado bastante este monte. Ahora diríjanse al norte.
4 Ordena al pueblo lo siguiente: ‘Cuando ustedes pasen por el territorio de sus hermanos, es decir, los hijos de Esaú, que habitan en Seír, ellos van a tener miedo de ustedes. Pero tengan mucho cuidado.
5 No se metan con ellos, porque yo no les voy a dar de su tierra ni siquiera lo que alcancen a cubrir con un pie. A Esaú le he dado en propiedad el monte de Seír.
6 Ustedes comprarán de ellos alimentos, y se los pagarán y comerán; y también comprarán de ellos agua, y beberán.’
7 El Señor tu Dios te ha bendecido en todo lo que haces, y él sabe que andas por este gran desierto. Estos cuarenta años el Señor tu Dios ha estado contigo, y nada te ha faltado.”
8 Entonces nos alejamos del territorio de nuestros hermanos, los hijos de Esaú, que habitaban en Seír. Tomamos el camino del Arabá, desde Elat y Ezión Guéber, y volvimos para tomar el camino del desierto de Moab.
9 »El Señor me dijo: “No molestes a Moab, ni trabes combate con ellos, porque no voy a darte posesión de su tierra. A los hijos de Lot les he dado Ar en propiedad.
10 »(Hace tiempo, esa tierra la habitaron los emitas, que eran gente grande y numerosa, y alta como los hijos de Anac.
11 También ellos eran considerados gigantes, como los hijos de Anac, aunque los moabitas los llaman emitas.
12 Seír estuvo habitada por los horeos, pero los hijos de Esaú los expulsaron de allí; los arrojaron de su presencia y ocuparon su lugar, como lo hizo Israel en la tierra que les dio el Señor por posesión.)
13 »”Y ahora, ¡levántense y pasen el arroyo de Zered!”
»Entonces pasamos el arroyo de Zered.
14 El tiempo transcurrido, desde que salimos de Cadés Barnea hasta que pasamos el arroyo de Zered, fue de treinta y ocho años. Para entonces, tal y como el Señor se lo había jurado, ya habían muerto todos los hombres en pie de guerra que había en el campamento,
15 pues la mano del Señor había venido sobre ellos para destruirlos en medio del campamento, hasta acabar con ellos.
16 »Después de que murieron todos los hombres de guerra que había entre el pueblo,
17 el Señor habló conmigo, y me dijo:
18 “Hoy vas a cruzar el territorio de Moab, para dirigirte a Ar.
19 ”Cuando ya estés cerca de los hijos de Amón, no los molestes ni trabes combate con ellos; porque no voy a darte en posesión su territorio. Esa tierra se la he dado en propiedad a los hijos de Lot.
20 »”(Esa región fue también considerada tierra de gigantes. En otro tiempo fue habitada por gigantes, a los cuales los amonitas llamaban zanzumitas.
21 ”Eran gente fuerte, alta y numerosa, como los hijos de Anac, a los cuales el Señor destruyó delante de los amonitas. Estos sucedieron a aquellos, y habitaron en su lugar,
22 ”como hizo el Señor con los hijos de Esaú que habitaban en Seír, delante de los cuales destruyó a los horeos. Ellos sucedieron a estos, y habitaron en su lugar hasta el día de hoy.
23 ”Los aveos, que habitaban en aldeas hasta Gaza, fueron destruidos por los caftoritas, que vinieron de Caftor y habitaron en su lugar.)
24 »”¡Vamos, levántense y pasen el arroyo de Arnón! Yo he puesto ya en tus manos a Sijón el amorreo, que es rey de Jesbón, y a su tierra. Comienza a tomar posesión de ella, y entra en combate contra él.
25 ”Este día comenzaré a sembrar ante ti el temor y el espanto entre los pueblos bajo el cielo. Ellos oirán hablar de ti, y ante ti temblarán y se llenarán de angustia.”
Israel derrota a Sijón
(Nm 21.21-30)26 »Desde el desierto de Cademot envié mensajeros a Sijón, rey de Jesbón, para que en son de paz le dijeran:
27 “Voy a pasar por tu tierra. Iré por el camino principal, sin apartarme ni a diestra ni a siniestra.
28 ”La comida que yo coma, me la venderás a cambio de dinero, y también me venderás el agua que yo beba. Solo pasaré a pie,
29 ”como me permitieron hacer los hijos de Esaú que habitan en Seír, y los moabitas que habitan en Ar. Tenemos que cruzar el Jordán y llegar a la tierra que el Señor nuestro Dios nos va a dar.”
30 »Pero Sijón, el rey de Jesbón, no nos dejó pasar por su territorio, y es que el Señor tu Dios había endurecido su espíritu, y cerrado su corazón, para entregarlo en tus manos, como hasta el día de hoy.
31 Entonces el Señor me dijo: “Mira, ya he comenzado a entregarte a Sijón y a su tierra. Comienza ya a tomar posesión de ella, porque es tu herencia.”
32 Y Sijón salió a nuestro encuentro, junto con todo su ejército, para pelear en Yahás.
33 Pero el Señor nuestro Dios lo entregó en nuestras manos, y lo derrotamos a él y a sus hijos, y a todo su pueblo.
34 Entonces nos apoderamos de todas sus ciudades, y las destruimos todas, y no dejamos con vida ni hombres, ni mujeres ni niños.
35 Solamente nos quedamos con los ganados y con los despojos de las ciudades que habíamos tomado.
36 Desde Aroer, que está junto a la ribera del arroyo de Arnón, y la ciudad que está en el valle, hasta Galaad, no hubo ciudad que se librara de nosotros; todas ellas las entregó el Señor nuestro Dios en nuestro poder.
37 A donde no llegamos fue a la tierra de los hijos de Amón, ni a todo lo que está a la orilla del arroyo de Jaboc, ni a las ciudades del monte, ni a ningún lugar que el Señor nuestro Dios nos había prohibido llegar.
