A Forbidden Mourning Practice
1 “You are the people of the Lord your God. So when you mourn for the dead, don't gash yourselves or shave the front of your head, as other people do. 2 You belong to the Lord your God; he has chosen you to be his own people from among all the peoples who live on earth.
Clean and Unclean Animals
(Leviticus 11.1-47)3 “Do not eat anything that the Lord has declared unclean. 4 You may eat these animals: cattle, sheep, goats, 5 deer, wild sheep, wild goats, or antelopes— 6 any animals that have divided hoofs and that also chew the cud. 7 But no animals may be eaten unless they have divided hoofs and also chew the cud. You may not eat camels, rabbits, or rock badgers. They must be considered unclean; they chew the cud but do not have divided hoofs. 8 Do not eat pigs. They must be considered unclean; they have divided hoofs but do not chew the cud. Do not eat any of these animals or even touch their dead bodies.
9 “You may eat any kind of fish that has fins and scales, 10 but anything living in the water that does not have fins and scales may not be eaten; it must be considered unclean.
11 “You may eat any clean bird. 12-18 But these are the kinds of birds you are not to eat: eagles, owls, hawks, falcons; buzzards, vultures, crows; ostriches; seagulls, storks, herons, pelicans, cormorants; hoopoes; and bats.
19 “All winged insects are unclean; do not eat them. 20 You may eat any clean insect.
21 “Do not eat any animal that dies a natural death. You may let the foreigners who live among you eat it, or you may sell it to other foreigners. But you belong to the Lord your God; you are his people.
“Do not cook a young sheep or goat in its mother's milk.
The Law of the Tithe
22 “Set aside a tithe—a tenth of all that your fields produce each year. 23 Then go to the one place where the Lord your God has chosen to be worshiped; and there in his presence eat the tithes of your grain, wine, and olive oil, and the first-born of your cattle and sheep. Do this so that you may learn to honor the Lord your God always. 24 If the place of worship is too far from your home for you to carry there the tithe of the produce that the Lord has blessed you with, then do this: 25 Sell your produce and take the money with you to the one place of worship. 26 Spend it on whatever you want—beef, lamb, wine, beer—and there, in the presence of the Lord your God, you and your families are to eat and enjoy yourselves.
27 “Do not neglect the Levites who live in your towns; they have no property of their own. 28 At the end of every third year bring the tithe of all your crops and store it in your towns. 29 This food is for the Levites, since they own no property, and for the foreigners, orphans, and widows who live in your towns. They are to come and get all they need. Do this, and the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do.
1 »Ustedes son hijos del Señor su Dios, así que no deben hacerse heridas en el cuerpo ni raparse por causa de un muerto.
2 Tú eres un pueblo santo, y perteneces al Señor tu Dios. De entre todos los pueblos de la tierra, el Señor te ha escogido para que seas un pueblo único, un pueblo suyo.
Animales limpios e inmundos
(Lv 11.1-47)3 »No comerás nada que sea repugnante.
4 Los animales que ustedes podrán comer son los siguientes: el buey, la oveja, la cabra,
5 el ciervo, la gacela, el corzo, la cabra montés, el íbice, el antílope y el carnero montés.
6 También podrán comer todo animal que sea rumiante y tenga pezuñas hendidas con dos uñas.
7 Pero de los rumiantes, o de los que tengan la pezuña hendida, no podrán comer los siguientes: el camello, la liebre y el damán, porque rumian pero no tienen la pezuña hendida. Son animales impuros.
8 Tampoco podrán comer cerdo, porque este tiene la pezuña hendida, pero no rumia. Deberán considerarlo un animal impuro. No comerán la carne de estos animales, ni tocarán sus cadáveres.
9 »Podrán comer, de todo lo que hay en el agua, todo lo que tenga aletas y escamas.
10 Pero no podrán comer nada que no tenga aletas ni escamas; lo considerarán impuro.
11 »Podrán comer toda ave limpia,
12 pero las aves que no podrán comer son las siguientes: el águila, el quebrantahuesos, el azor,
13 el gallinazo, ninguna especie de milano,
14 ninguna especie de cuervo,
15 el avestruz, la lechuza, la gaviota, ninguna especie de gavilán,
16 el búho, el ibis, el calamón,
17 el pelícano, el buitre, el somormujo,
18 la cigüeña, ninguna especie de garza, la abubilla y el murciélago.
19 No comerán ningún insecto alado; lo considerarán impuro.
20 Pero podrán comer toda ave limpia.
21 »No comerán ningún animal que encuentren muerto, porque ustedes son un pueblo consagrado al Señor su Dios. Podrán dárselo o vendérselo a los extranjeros que vivan en sus ciudades; ellos sí podrán comerlo.
»No guisarás el cabrito en la leche de su madre.
La ley del diezmo
22 »Cada año deberás presentar, sin falta, la décima parte de todo el grano que tu campo produzca.
23 Y esa décima parte de tu grano, de tu vino y de tu aceite, y las primicias de tus rebaños y ganados las comerás delante del Señor tu Dios, en el lugar que él escoja como residencia de su nombre, para que aprendas a temer siempre al Señor tu Dios.
24 Si el Señor tu Dios te bendice, pero el camino es demasiado largo y te queda lejos llevar esa décima parte hasta el lugar donde el Señor tu Dios escogió como residencia de su nombre,
25 entonces venderás esa décima parte y, con el dinero en la mano, te presentarás en el lugar que el Señor tu Dios ha escogido.
26 Con ese dinero podrás también comprar todo lo que desees: vacas, ovejas, vino, sidra, o cualquier otra cosa que tú desees, y lo comerás delante del Señor tu Dios, y tú y tu familia se regocijarán.
27 »No desampares al levita que habite en tus ciudades, pues ellos no comparten contigo ninguna propiedad.
28 »Cada tres años cumplidos sacarás todo el diezmo de tus productos de aquel año, y lo almacenarás en tus ciudades.
29 Como los levitas no comparten contigo ninguna propiedad, podrán entonces venir y comer hasta quedar satisfechos, lo mismo que los extranjeros, los huérfanos y las viudas que haya en tus ciudades. Así el Señor tu Dios te bendecirá en todo lo que hagas.
