King Josiah of Judah
(2 Chronicles 34.12 2)1 Josiah was eight years old when he became king of Judah, and he ruled in Jerusalem for thirty-one years. His mother was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah from the town of Bozkath. 2 Josiah did what was pleasing to the Lord; he followed the example of his ancestor King David, strictly obeying all the laws of God.
The Book of the Law Is Discovered
(2 Chronicles 34.8-28)3 In the eighteenth year of his reign, King Josiah sent the court secretary Shaphan, the son of Azaliah and grandson of Meshullam, to the Temple with the order: 4 “Go to the High Priest Hilkiah and get a report on the amount of money that the priests on duty at the entrance to the Temple have collected from the people. 5 Tell him to give the money to the men who are in charge of the repairs in the Temple. They are to pay 6 the carpenters, the builders, and the masons, and buy the timber and the stones used in the repairs. 7 The men in charge of the work are thoroughly honest, so there is no need to require them to account for the funds.”
8 Shaphan delivered the king's order to Hilkiah, and Hilkiah told him that he had found the book of the Law in the Temple. Hilkiah gave him the book, and Shaphan read it. 9 Then he went back to the king and reported: “Your servants have taken the money that was in the Temple and have handed it over to the men in charge of the repairs.” 10 And then he said, “I have here a book that Hilkiah gave me.” And he read it aloud to the king.
11 When the king heard the book being read, he tore his clothes in dismay, 12 and gave the following order to Hilkiah the priest, to Ahikam son of Shaphan, to Achbor son of Micaiah, to Shaphan, the court secretary, and to Asaiah, the king's attendant: 13 “Go and consult the Lord for me and for all the people of Judah about the teachings of this book. The Lord is angry with us because our ancestors have not done what this book says must be done.”
14 Hilkiah, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to consult a woman named Huldah, a prophet who lived in the newer part of Jerusalem. (Her husband Shallum, the son of Tikvah and grandson of Harhas, was in charge of the Temple robes.) They described to her what had happened, 15 and she told them to go back to the king and give him 16 the following message from the Lord: “I am going to punish Jerusalem and all its people, as written in the book that the king has read. 17 They have rejected me and have offered sacrifices to other gods, and so have stirred up my anger by all they have done. My anger is aroused against Jerusalem, and it will not die down. 18 As for the king himself, this is what I, the Lord God of Israel, say: You listened to what is written in the book, 19 and you repented and humbled yourself before me, tearing your clothes and weeping, when you heard how I threatened to punish Jerusalem and its people. I will make it a terrifying sight, a place whose name people will use as a curse. But I have heard your prayer, 20 and the punishment which I am going to bring on Jerusalem will not come until after your death. I will let you die in peace.”
The men returned to King Josiah with this message.
Reinado de Josías
(2 Cr 34.1-2)1 Josías tenía ocho años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó treinta y un años en Jerusalén. Su madre se llamaba Yedidá hija de Adaías, y era de Boscat.

Hallazgo del libro de la ley
(2 Cr 34.8-33)3 En el año dieciocho de su reinado, Josías envió al escriba Safán, que era hijo de Azalía y nieto de Mesulán, al templo del Señor, con estas instrucciones:
4 «Ve a ver al sumo sacerdote Hilcías, y dile que recoja el dinero que el pueblo ha traído al templo del Señor, y que han recibido los guardianes de la puerta.
5 Dile que entreguen ese dinero a los que tienen a su cargo las obras de reparación del templo del Señor, y a los que están reparando las grietas del templo;
6 es decir, a los carpinteros, maestros y albañiles, y a los que compran la madera y la piedra de cantería para reparar el templo.
7 Dile que no les pidan cuentas del dinero que se les confíe, porque ellos proceden con honradez.»
8 El sumo sacerdote Hilcías dijo entonces al escriba Safán:
«He hallado en el templo del Señor el libro de la ley.»
Y no solo le dio el libro a Safán, sino que se lo leyó.
9 Y cuando el escriba Safán se presentó ante el rey, le dijo:
«Tus siervos han recogido el dinero que había en el templo, y se lo han entregado a los que hacen las obras y tienen a su cargo los arreglos del templo del Señor.»
10 Además, el escriba Safán le informó al rey:
«El sacerdote Hilcías me ha dado un libro.»
Enseguida, Safán se lo leyó al rey.
11 Y en cuanto el rey escuchó las palabras del libro de la ley, se rasgó las vestiduras
12 y ordenó al sacerdote Hilcías, a Ajicán hijo de Safán, a Acbor hijo de Micaías, al escriba Safán y a su siervo Asaías, lo siguiente:
13 «Vayan y consulten al Señor por mí y por el pueblo, y por todo Judá, en cuanto a las palabras de este libro que se ha hallado. Con toda seguridad la ira del Señor se ha encendido contra nosotros en gran manera, pues nuestros padres no atendieron a las palabras de este libro, para conducirse en conformidad con todo lo que nos fue escrito.»
14 Entonces el sacerdote Hilcías, y Ajicán, Acbor, Safán y Asaías, fueron a ver a la profetisa Julda, que era la mujer de Salún, que cuidaba las vestiduras y era hijo de Ticva y nieto de Jarjás. Julda vivía en la segunda parte de la ciudad de Jerusalén. Hablaron con ella,
15 y ella les dijo:
«Así ha dicho el Señor, el Dios de Israel: “Digan al varón que los envió a consultarme,
16 que yo, el Señor, voy a traer sobre este lugar, y sobre sus habitantes, todo el mal de que habla este libro que ha leído el rey de Judá.
17 Lo haré porque me abandonaron, quemaron incienso a dioses extraños, y provocaron mi enojo con todo lo que han hecho. Mi ira se ha encendido contra este lugar, y no se apagará.
18 Pero al rey de Judá que los ha enviado a consultarme le dirán que yo, el Señor y Dios de Israel, he dicho: ‘Puesto que tú has prestado atención a las palabras del libro,
19 y tu corazón se enterneció, y te humillaste delante de mí cuando oíste mi sentencia contra este lugar y contra sus habitantes, los cuales van a ser asolados y malditos, y puesto que te rasgaste las vestiduras y lloraste en mi presencia, también yo te he prestado atención.’
—Palabra del Señor.20 »”Por lo tanto, yo te reuniré con tus antepasados, y serás llevado a tu sepulcro en paz, y ya no verás todo el mal que voy a traer sobre este lugar.”»
Ellos llevaron al rey la respuesta.
