The King Asks Isaiah's Advice
(Isaiah 37.1-7)1 As soon as King Hezekiah heard their report, he tore his clothes in grief, put on sackcloth, and went to the Temple of the Lord. 2 He sent Eliakim, the official in charge of the palace, Shebna, the court secretary, and the senior priests to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz. They also were wearing sackcloth. 3 This is the message which he told them to give Isaiah: “Today is a day of suffering; we are being punished and are in disgrace. We are like a woman who is ready to give birth, but is too weak to do it. 4 The Assyrian emperor has sent his chief official to insult the living God. May the Lord your God hear these insults and punish those who spoke them. So pray to God for those of our people who survive.”
5 When Isaiah received King Hezekiah's message, 6 he sent back this answer: “The Lord tells you not to let the Assyrians frighten you with their claims that he cannot save you. 7 The Lord will cause the emperor to hear a rumor that will make him go back to his own country, and the Lord will have him killed there.”
The Assyrians Send Another Threat
(Isaiah 37.8-20)8 The Assyrian official learned that the emperor had left Lachish and was fighting against the nearby city of Libnah; so he went there to consult him. 9 Word reached the Assyrians that the Egyptian army, led by King Tirhakah of Ethiopia, was coming to attack them. When the emperor heard this, he sent a letter to King Hezekiah of Judah 10 to tell him, “The god you are trusting in has told you that you will not fall into my hands, but don't let that deceive you. 11 You have heard what an Assyrian emperor does to any country he decides to destroy. Do you think that you can escape? 12 My ancestors destroyed the cities of Gozan, Haran, and Rezeph, and killed the people of Betheden who lived in Telassar, and none of their gods could save them. 13 Where are the kings of the cities of Hamath, Arpad, Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah?”
14 King Hezekiah took the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went to the Temple, placed the letter there in the presence of the Lord, 15 and prayed, “O Lord, the God of Israel, seated on your throne above the winged creatures, you alone are God, ruling all the kingdoms of the world. You created the earth and the sky. 16 Now, Lord, look at what is happening to us. Listen to all the things that Sennacherib is saying to insult you, the living God. 17 We all know, Lord, that the emperors of Assyria have destroyed many nations, made their lands desolate, 18 and burned up their gods—which were no gods at all, only images of wood and stone made by human hands. 19 Now, Lord our God, rescue us from the Assyrians, so that all the nations of the world will know that only you, O Lord, are God.”
Isaiah's Message to the King
(Isaiah 37.21-38)20 Then Isaiah sent a message telling King Hezekiah that in answer to the king's prayer 21 the Lord had said, “The city of Jerusalem laughs at you, Sennacherib, and makes fun of you. 22 Whom do you think you have been insulting and ridiculing? You have been disrespectful to me, the holy God of Israel. 23 You sent your messengers to boast to me that with all your chariots you had conquered the highest mountains of Lebanon. You boasted that there you cut down the tallest cedars and the finest cypress trees and that you reached the deepest parts of the forests. 24 You boasted that you dug wells and drank water in foreign lands and that the feet of your soldiers tramped the Nile River dry.
25 “Have you never heard that I planned all this long ago? And now I have carried it out. I gave you the power to turn fortified cities into piles of rubble. 26 The people who lived there were powerless; they were frightened and stunned. They were like grass in a field or weeds growing on a roof when the hot east wind blasts them.
27 “But I know everything about you, what you do and where you go. I know how you rage against me. 28 I have received the report of that rage and that pride of yours, and now I will put a hook through your nose and a bit in your mouth, and take you back by the same road you came.”
29 Then Isaiah said to King Hezekiah, “Here is a sign of what will happen. This year and next you will have only wild grain to eat, but the following year you will be able to plant your grain and harvest it, and plant vines and eat grapes. 30 Those in Judah who survive will flourish like plants that send roots deep into the ground and produce fruit. 31 There will be people in Jerusalem and on Mount Zion who will survive, because the Lord is determined to make this happen.
32 “And this is what the Lord has said about the Assyrian emperor: ‘He will not enter this city or shoot a single arrow against it. No soldiers with shields will come near the city, and no siege mounds will be built around it. 33 He will go back by the same road he came, without entering this city. I, the Lord, have spoken. 34 I will defend this city and protect it, for the sake of my own honor and because of the promise I made to my servant David.’”
35 That night an angel of the Lord went to the Assyrian camp and killed 185,000 soldiers. At dawn the next day there they lay, all dead! 36 Then the Assyrian emperor Sennacherib withdrew and returned to Nineveh. 37 One day, when he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisroch, two of his sons, Adrammelech and Sharezer, killed him with their swords and then escaped to the land of Ararat. Another of his sons, Esarhaddon, succeeded him as emperor.
Judá es liberado de Senaquerib
(2 Cr 32.20-23Is 37.1-38)1 Cuando el rey Ezequías oyó esto, se rasgó las vestiduras y se vistió de cilicio, y entró en el templo del Señor.
2 Luego ordenó que el mayordomo Eliaquín, el escriba Sebna y los ancianos de los sacerdotes se vistieran también de cilicio, y que fueran a ver al profeta Isaías hijo de Amoz
3 y le dijeran:
«Así ha dicho Ezequías: “Este es un día de angustia, de reprensión y de blasfemia, pues los hijos están a punto de nacer, y la parturienta ya no tiene fuerzas.
4 Tal vez el Señor tu Dios habrá oído todo lo que ha dicho el Rabsaces, a quien su señor, el rey de Asiria, ha enviado para blasfemar al Dios viviente y para ofenderlo con sus palabras, las cuales el Señor tu Dios habrá oído. Por lo tanto, eleva una oración por el remanente que aún queda.”»
5 Los siervos del rey Ezequías fueron a hablar con Isaías,
6 y este les respondió:
«Vayan y digan al rey que así ha dicho el Señor: “No tengas temor por las palabras que has oído, con las que me han blasfemado los siervos del rey de Asiria.
7 Yo voy a poner un espíritu en él que lo hará oír rumores, y volverá a su tierra, y en su tierra haré que caiga a filo de espada.”»
8 El Rabsaces oyó decir que el rey de Asiria se había ido de Laquis, y cuando volvió adonde este había estado lo halló combatiendo contra Libna.
9 Como también oyó decir que el rey Tiracá de Etiopía había salido a combatirlo, volvió y envió embajadores a que le dijeran a Ezequías:
10 «No te dejes engañar por el Dios en quien tú confías, y que dice que Jerusalén no será entregada en manos del rey de Asiria.
11 Tú ya debes saber lo que los reyes de Asiria han hecho con todas las naciones, y cómo las han destruido. ¿Acaso crees que tú podrás escapar?
12 ¿Acaso los dioses de las naciones que mis padres destruyeron pudieron librarlas? Me refiero a Gozán, Jarán, Resef, y a la gente de Edén que estaba en Telasar.
13 ¿Dónde están los reyes de Jamat, Arfad, y de las ciudades de Sefarvayin, Hena y Guivá?»
14 Ezequías tomó las cartas de mano de los embajadores, y después de leerlas subió al templo del Señor y, extendiéndolas delante del Señor,
15 oró en su presencia. Dijo:
«Señor y Dios de Israel, que habitas entre los querubines, solo tú eres el Dios de todos los reinos de la tierra. ¡Tú hiciste el cielo y la tierra!
16 Inclina, Señor, tu oído, y escucha. Abre, Señor, tus ojos, y mira. Oye las palabras de Senaquerib, que ha mandado blasfemarte a ti, el Dios viviente.
17 Es verdad, Señor, que los reyes de Asiria han destruido naciones y países,
18 y que han lanzado al fuego a sus dioses; pero es que ellos no eran dioses, sino hechura humana de madera y de piedra. ¡Por eso los destruyeron!
19 Pero ahora, Señor y Dios nuestro, ¡sálvanos de su poder! Yo te lo ruego, para que todos los reinos de la tierra sepan que solo tú, Señor, eres Dios.»
20 Entonces Isaías hijo de Amoz mandó a decir a Ezequías:
«Así ha dicho el Señor, Dios de Israel: “He escuchado lo que me has pedido acerca de Senaquerib, el rey de Asiria.”
21 Y esto es lo que el Señor ha dicho acerca de él: “La virginal hija de Sión te menosprecia y te escarnece. Detrás de ti mueve su cabeza la hija de Jerusalén.”
22 ¿A quién has vituperado y blasfemado? ¿Contra quién has alzado la voz, y levantado en alto tus ojos? ¡Contra el Santo de Israel!
23 Por medio de tus mensajeros has vituperado al Señor, al decir: “Con la multitud de mis carros he subido a las alturas de los montes y a lo más inaccesible del Líbano, para cortar sus altos cedros y sus mejores cipreses; me he alojado en sus lugares más remotos, en el bosque de sus más fértiles campos.
24 He cavado pozos y bebido aguas ajenas; con las plantas de mis pies he dejado secos todos los ríos de Egipto.”
25 ¿Nunca has oído decir que, hace ya mucho tiempo, yo lo hice, y que desde tiempos pasados lo tengo planeado? Ahora lo he realizado, y tú causarás mucha desolación, y reducirás las ciudades fortificadas a montones de escombros.
26 Sus habitantes, impotentes, se acobardaron y quedaron confundidos. ¡Parecían hierba del campo, verdes hortalizas, paja en los techos, seca antes de tiempo!
27 Yo te conozco muy bien; sé cuándo entras y cuándo sales, y también sé cuánto ruges contra mí.
28 Y porque me has desafiado, y porque me he enterado de tu arrogancia, voy a ponerte un gancho en la trompa y un freno en el hocico, y te haré volver por donde viniste.
29 »A ti, Ezequías, te doy esta señal: Este año, y el siguiente, comerán ustedes lo que crezca por sí mismo, pero el tercer año podrán sembrar y segar, y plantar viñas, y comerán lo que ellas produzcan.
30 Y los sobrevivientes de Judá volverán a echar raíces y tendrán muchos hijos.
31 Porque en Jerusalén y en el monte Sión quedará un remanente que se salvará. Esto lo haré yo, el Señor, por mi gran amor.
32 »Por tanto, así dice el Señor acerca del rey de Asiria: “No entrará en esta ciudad. No lanzará ninguna flecha contra ella, ni se enfrentará a ella con escudos, ni levantará contra ella terraplenes.
33 Por el mismo camino que vino, volverá, y no entrará en esta ciudad.
—Palabra del Señor.34 »”Por mí mismo, y por mi siervo David, yo ampararé a esta ciudad, y la salvaré.”»
35 Y sucedió que esa misma noche el ángel del Señor salió y mató a ciento ochenta y cinco mil hombres en el campamento de los asirios. Por la mañana, cuando se levantaron, se encontraron con que por todas partes había cadáveres.
36 Entonces el rey Senaquerib de Asiria se fue de regreso a Nínive, y nunca más volvió,
37 pues un día, mientras él adoraba en el templo de Nisroc, su dios, sus hijos Adramelec y Sarezer lo hirieron a filo de espada, y luego huyeron al territorio de Ararat. En su lugar reinó su hijo Esarjadón.
