Queen Athaliah of Judah
(2 Chronicles 22.10—23.15)1 As soon as King Ahaziah's mother Athaliah learned of her son's murder, she gave orders for all the members of the royal family to be killed. 2 Only Ahaziah's son Joash escaped. He was about to be killed with the others, but was rescued by his aunt Jehosheba, who was King Jehoram's daughter and Ahaziah's half sister. She took him and his nurse into a bedroom in the Temple and hid him from Athaliah, so that he was not killed. 3 For six years Jehosheba took care of the boy and kept him hidden in the Temple, while Athaliah ruled as queen.
4 But in the seventh year Jehoiada the priest sent for the officers in charge of the royal bodyguard and of the palace guards, and told them to come to the Temple, where he made them agree under oath to what he planned to do. He showed them King Ahaziah's son Joash 5 and gave them the following orders: “When you come on duty on the Sabbath, one third of you are to guard the palace; 6 another third are to stand guard at the Sur Gate, and the other third are to stand guard at the gate behind the other guards. 7 The two groups that go off duty on the Sabbath are to stand guard at the Temple to protect the king. 8 You are to guard King Joash with drawn swords and stay with him wherever he goes. Anyone who comes near you is to be killed.”
9 The officers obeyed Jehoiada's instructions and brought their men to him—those going off duty on the Sabbath and those going on duty. 10 He gave the officers the spears and shields that had belonged to King David and had been kept in the Temple, 11 and he stationed the men with drawn swords all around the front of the Temple, to protect the king. 12 Then Jehoiada led Joash out, placed the crown on his head, and gave him a copy of the laws governing kingship. Then Joash was anointed and proclaimed king. The people clapped their hands and shouted, “Long live the king!”
13 Queen Athaliah heard the noise being made by the guards and the people, so she hurried to the Temple, where the crowd had gathered. 14 There she saw the new king standing by the column at the entrance of the Temple, as was the custom. He was surrounded by the officers and the trumpeters, and the people were all shouting joyfully and blowing trumpets. Athaliah tore her clothes in distress and shouted, “Treason! Treason!”
15 Jehoiada did not want Athaliah killed in the Temple area, so he ordered the army officers: “Take her out between the rows of guards, and kill anyone who tries to rescue her.” 16 They seized her, took her to the palace, and there at the Horse Gate they killed her.
Jehoiada's Reforms
(2 Chronicles 23.16-21)17 The priest Jehoiada had King Joash and the people make a covenant with the Lord that they would be the Lord's people; he also made a covenant between the king and the people. 18 Then the people went to the temple of Baal and tore it down; they smashed the altars and the idols, and killed Mattan, the priest of Baal, in front of the altars.
Jehoiada put guards on duty at the Temple, 19 and then he, the officers, the royal bodyguard, and the palace guards escorted the king from the Temple to the palace, followed by all the people. Joash entered by the Guard Gate and took his place on the throne. 20 All the people were filled with happiness, and the city was quiet, now that Athaliah had been killed in the palace.
21 Joash became king of Judah at the age of seven.
Atalía usurpa el trono
(2 Cr 22.10—23.21)1 Cuando Atalía, la madre de Ocozías, vio muerto a su hijo, se dispuso a poner fin a la familia real.
2 Pero Yoseba, que era hija del rey Jorán y hermana de Ocozías, se llevó a Joás hijo de Ocozías y, sin que nadie la viera, lo escondió de Atalía en una alcoba, junto con su nodriza. Así lo libró de que lo mataran junto con los otros hijos del rey.
3 Y Joás estuvo escondido seis años en el templo del Señor, junto con su nodriza, mientras Atalía era la reina del país.
4 Pero en el séptimo año Joyadá convocó a los jefes de centenas y a los capitanes, y a la gente de la guardia, y los llevó al templo del Señor, donde bajo juramento hizo alianza con ellos, después de lo cual les mostró al hijo del rey
5 y les ordenó:
«Ustedes van a hacer lo siguiente: en el día de reposo una tercera parte de ustedes tendrá a su cargo la vigilancia del palacio del rey.
6 Otra tercera parte se apostará a la entrada de Shur, y la otra tercera parte se apostará a la entrada del postigo de la guardia. Así cuidarán de que el palacio no sea allanado.
7 Las dos terceras partes de ustedes que están libres el día de reposo tendrán a su cargo la vigilancia del templo del Señor y del rey.
8 Estarán pendientes del rey por todos los flancos, cada uno con sus armas en la mano. Al que se acerque demasiado, mátenlo. Ustedes deberán vigilar cada paso del rey.»
9 Los jefes de centenas se reunieron con el sacerdote Joyadá e hicieron todo lo que el sacerdote Joyadá les ordenó; cada uno de ellos reunió a su gente, es decir, tanto a los que estaban de servicio en día de reposo como a los que estaban libres en día de reposo.
10 El sacerdote entregó a los jefes de centenas las lanzas y los escudos que habían sido del rey David, y que estaban en el templo del Señor.
11 Los de la guardia se formaron, desde el lado derecho hasta el lado izquierdo del templo, y junto al altar y el templo, y en derredor del rey. Cada uno tenía en sus manos sus armas.
12 Luego Joyadá sacó al hijo del rey, le puso la corona y el testimonio, lo ungieron y lo proclamaron rey. Aplaudían y gritaban: «¡Viva el rey!»
13 Cuando Atalía oyó el bullicio de la gente que corría, entró al templo del Señor y se hizo presente.
14 Cuando vio que el rey estaba junto a la columna, como era la costumbre, y que los príncipes y los trompeteros estaban junto al rey, y que todo el pueblo del país se regocijaba y tocaba las trompetas, se rasgó las vestiduras y a voz en cuello gritó: «¡Traición, traición!»
15 Pero el sacerdote Joyadá dio órdenes a los jefes de centenas que gobernaban el ejército, y les dijo:
«¡Échenla fuera del recinto del templo! A quien la siga, ¡mátenlo a filo de espada!»
Y es que el sacerdote había ordenado que no la mataran en el templo del Señor.
16 Por eso le abrieron paso, y la mataron en el camino por donde la gente de a caballo entra al palacio del rey.
17 El sacerdote Joyadá hizo un pacto entre el Señor, por una parte, y entre el rey y el pueblo, por la otra, y juraron que serían el pueblo del Señor. También se hizo un pacto entre el rey y el pueblo.
18 Y toda la gente del país entró en el templo de Baal, y lo derribaron; también destruyeron del todo sus altares y sus imágenes, y delante de los altares mataron a Matán, que era sacerdote de Baal.
Luego, el sacerdote apostó una guarnición en el templo del Señor.
19 Después tomó a los jefes de centenas, a los capitanes y a la guardia, y a todo el pueblo del país, y llevaron al rey desde el templo del Señor, siguiendo el camino que va de la puerta de la guardia al palacio del rey, y el rey se sentó en el trono real.
20 Y todo el pueblo del país se regocijó, y la ciudad se quedó tranquila, pues Atalía había muerto a filo de espada junto al palacio del rey.
21 Joás tenía siete años cuando comenzó a reinar.
