The Revolt against Athaliah
(2 Kings 11.4-16)1 After waiting six years Jehoiada the priest decided that it was time to take action. He made a pact with five army officers: Azariah son of Jeroham, Ishmael son of Jehohanan, Azariah son of Obed, Maaseiah son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat son of Zichri. 2 They traveled to all the cities of Judah and brought back with them to Jerusalem the Levites and all the heads of the clans.
3 They all gathered in the Temple, and there they made a covenant with Joash, the king's son. Jehoiada said to them, “Here is the son of the late king. He is now to be king, as the Lord promised that King David's descendants would be. 4 This is what we will do. When the priests and Levites come on duty on the Sabbath, one third of them will guard the Temple gates, 5 another third will guard the royal palace, and the rest will be stationed at the Foundation Gate. All the people will assemble in the Temple courtyard. 6 No one is to enter the Temple buildings except the priests and the Levites who are on duty. They may enter, because they are consecrated, but the rest of the people must obey the Lord's instructions and stay outside. 7 The Levites are to stand guard around the king, with their swords drawn, and are to stay with the king wherever he goes. Anyone who tries to enter the Temple is to be killed.”
8 The Levites and the people of Judah carried out Jehoiada's instructions. The men were not dismissed when they went off duty on the Sabbath, so the commanders had available both those coming on duty and those going off. 9 Jehoiada gave the officers the spears and shields that had belonged to King David and had been kept in the Temple. 10 He stationed the men with drawn swords all around the front of the Temple, to protect the king. 11 Then Jehoiada led Joash out, placed the crown on his head, and gave him a copy of the laws governing kingship. And so he was made king. Jehoiada the priest and his sons anointed Joash, and everyone shouted, “Long live the king!”
12 Athaliah heard the people cheering for the king, so she hurried to the Temple, where the crowd had gathered. 13 There she saw the new king at the Temple entrance, standing by the column reserved for kings and surrounded by the army officers and the trumpeters. All the people were shouting joyfully and blowing trumpets, and the Temple musicians with their instruments were leading the celebration. She tore her clothes in distress and shouted, “Treason! Treason!”
14 Jehoiada did not want Athaliah killed in the Temple area, so he called out the army officers and said, “Take her out between the rows of guards, and kill anyone who tries to rescue her.”
15 They seized her, took her to the palace, and there at the Horse Gate they killed her.
Jehoiada's Reforms
(2 Kings 11.17-20)16 The priest Jehoiada had King Joash and the people join him in making a covenant that they would be the Lord's people. 17 Then they all went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They smashed the altars and idols there and killed Mattan, the priest of Baal, in front of the altars. 18 Jehoiada put the priests and Levites in charge of the work of the Temple. They were to carry out the duties assigned to them by King David and to burn the sacrifices offered to the Lord in accordance with the Law of Moses. They were also in charge of the music and the celebrations. 19 Jehoiada also put guards on duty at the Temple gates to keep out anyone who was ritually unclean.
20 The army officers, the leading citizens, the officials, and all the rest of the people joined Jehoiada in a procession that brought the king from the Temple to the palace. They entered by the main gate, and the king took his place on the throne. 21 All the people were filled with happiness, and the city was quiet, now that Athaliah had been killed.
1 En el séptimo año Joyadá se animó y se alió con los jefes de centenas Azarías hijo de Jeroán, Ismael hijo de Johanán, Azarías hijo de Obed, Maseías hijo de Adaías, y Elisafat hijo de Zicri.
2 Estos recorrieron el país de Judá y reunieron a los levitas de todas las ciudades de Judá, lo mismo que a los jefes de las familias de Israel, y se concentraron en Jerusalén.
3 Allí, en el templo de Dios, toda la multitud hizo un pacto con el rey. Y Joyadá les dijo:
«Aquí tienen al hijo del rey, y él reinará, como el Señor lo ha prometido respecto de los hijos de David.
4 Ahora, hagan esto: una tercera parte de ustedes, los que pueden entrar en el día de reposo, fungirán como porteros con los sacerdotes y los levitas.
5 Otra tercera parte estará en el palacio del rey, y la tercera parte restante estará en la Puerta del Cimiento. Todo el pueblo estará en los patios del templo del Señor.
6 Nadie podrá entrar en el templo del Señor; solo podrán entrar los sacerdotes y los levitas que ministran, porque están consagrados. Todo el pueblo hará guardia delante del Señor.
7 Los levitas rodearán al rey por todos lados, y cada uno de ellos tendrá sus armas en la mano. Cualquiera que entre en el templo, morirá. Ustedes deben acompañar al rey cuando entre y cuando salga.»
8 Los levitas y todo Judá siguieron al pie de la letra las órdenes del sacerdote Joyadá. Cada jefe tomó a los suyos, tanto a los que entraban en el día de reposo como a los que salían, porque el sacerdote Joyadá no dio a nadie permiso de ausentarse.
9 Además, el sacerdote Joyadá entregó a los jefes de centenas las lanzas, los paveses y los escudos que habían sido del rey David, y que estaban en el templo de Dios,
10 y puso en orden a todo el pueblo. Cada uno de ellos tenía su espada en la mano, desde el rincón derecho del templo hasta el izquierdo, hacia el altar y el templo, y por todas partes alrededor del rey.
11 Entonces sacaron al hijo del rey, le pusieron la corona y el testimonio, y lo proclamaron rey. Joyadá y sus hijos lo ungieron, mientras gritaban: «¡Viva el rey!»
12 Cuando Atalía oyó el estruendo de la gente que corría, y de los que aclamaban al rey, fue al templo del Señor para encontrarse con la gente,
13 y al ver Atalía al rey a la entrada, junto a su columna, y junto al rey a los príncipes y los trompeteros, y que todo la gente se mostraba muy alegre y tocaba bocinas, y que los cantores dirigían la alabanza con instrumentos de música, rasgó sus vestidos y gritó:
«¡Traición! ¡Traición!»
14 Pero el sacerdote Joyadá ordenó que salieran los jefes de centenas del ejército, y les dijo:
«¡Sáquenla de aquí! Y a quien la siga, ¡mátenlo a filo de espada!»
Y es que el sacerdote había ordenado que no la mataran dentro del templo del Señor.
15 Ellos le echaron mano, y tan pronto como ella cruzó el umbral de la puerta de las caballerizas del rey, la mataron.
16 Entonces Joyadá hizo un pacto con todo el pueblo y con el rey, de que ellos serían el pueblo del Señor.
17 Después de esto, todo el pueblo entró en el templo de Baal y lo derribaron, y derribaron también sus altares, hicieron pedazos sus imágenes, y delante de los altares mataron a Matán, sacerdote de Baal.
18 Luego Joyadá ordenó los oficios en el templo del Señor, bajo el control de los sacerdotes y levitas, según David los había distribuido en el templo del Señor, para ofrecer al Señor los holocaustos, con gozo y con cánticos, como está descrito en la ley de Moisés y conforme a las disposiciones de David.
19 Puso también porteros a la entrada del templo del Señor, para que de ninguna manera entrara nadie que estuviera impuro.
20 Después llamó a los jefes de centenas, y a los principales, a los que gobernaban el pueblo y a todo el pueblo de la tierra, para llevar al rey desde el templo del Señor. Cuando llegaron a la mitad de la puerta principal del palacio del rey, sentaron al rey sobre el trono del reino.
21 Y después de que mataron a Atalía a filo de espada, todo el pueblo del país vivió feliz y la ciudad tuvo tranquilidad.
