King Ahaziah of Judah
(2 Kings 8.25-292 9.21-28)1 Some Arabs had led a raid and killed all of King Jehoram's sons except Ahaziah, the youngest. So now the people of Jerusalem made Ahaziah king as his father's successor. 2-3 Ahaziah became king at the age of twenty-two, and he ruled in Jerusalem for one year. Ahaziah also followed the example of King Ahab's family, since his mother Athaliah—the daughter of King Ahab and granddaughter of King Omri of Israel—gave him advice that led him into evil. 4 He sinned against the Lord, because after his father's death other members of King Ahab's family became his advisers, and they led to his downfall. 5 Following their advice, he joined King Joram of Israel in a war against King Hazael of Syria. The armies clashed at Ramoth in Gilead, and Joram was wounded in battle. 6 He returned to the city of Jezreel to recover from his wounds, and Ahaziah went there to visit him.
7 God used this visit to Joram to bring about Ahaziah's downfall. While Ahaziah was there, he and Joram were confronted by a man named Jehu son of Nimshi, whom the Lord had chosen to destroy the dynasty of Ahab. 8 As Jehu was carrying out God's sentence on the dynasty, he came across a group made up of Judean leaders and of Ahaziah's nephews that had accompanied Ahaziah on his visit. Jehu killed them all. 9 A search was made for Ahaziah, and he was found hiding in Samaria. They took him to Jehu and put him to death. But they did bury his body out of respect for his grandfather King Jehoshaphat, who had done all he could to serve the Lord.
No member of Ahaziah's family was left who could rule the kingdom.
Queen Athaliah of Judah
(2 Kings 11.1-3)10 As soon as King Ahaziah's mother Athaliah learned of her son's murder, she gave orders for all the members of the royal family of Judah to be killed. 11 Ahaziah had a half sister, Jehosheba, who was married to a priest named Jehoiada. She secretly rescued one of Ahaziah's sons, Joash, took him away from the other princes who were about to be murdered and hid him and a nurse in a bedroom at the Temple. By keeping him hidden, she saved him from death at the hands of Athaliah. 12 For six years he remained there in hiding, while Athaliah ruled as queen.
Reinado de Ocozías de Judá
(2 R 8.25-29)1 Para suceder al rey Jorán de Judá, los habitantes de Jerusalén proclamaron rey a Ocozías, su hijo menor. Ocozías llegó al trono porque una banda de árabes llegó al campamento y mató a todos los hijos mayores de Jorán.
2 Ocozías comenzó a reinar cuando tenía veintidós años, y reinó un año en Jerusalén. Su madre se llamaba Atalía, y era hija de Omri.
3 Pero también Ocozías siguió el mal ejemplo de la casa de Ajab, pues su madre lo aconsejaba a que hiciera lo malo.
4 Para su perdición, Ocozías hizo lo malo a los ojos del Señor, a la manera de la casa de Ajab, pues después de la muerte de su padre ellos fueron sus consejeros.
5 Ocozías se dejó llevar por los consejos de ellos, y en alianza con el rey Jorán de Israel, hijo de Ajab, declaró la guerra al rey Jazael de Siria, pero en Ramot de Galaad los sirios hirieron de muerte a Jorán.
6 Este volvió entonces a Jezrel para curarse de las heridas que le habían hecho en Ramot durante el combate contra el rey Jazael de Siria, y como Jorán hijo de Ajab se hallaba enfermo en Jezrel, el rey Ocozías de Judá, hijo de Jorán, fue a visitarlo.
Jehú mata a Ocozías
(2 R 9.27-29)7 Todo esto venía de Dios, para que Ocozías fuera destruido al llegar adonde estaba Jorán, porque en cuanto Ocozías llegó, se unió a Jorán para atacar a Jehú hijo de Nimsi, al cual el Señor había escogido para exterminar a la familia de Ajab.
8 Al dictar Jehú sentencia contra la casa de Ajab, encontró a los jefes de Judá y a los sobrinos de Ocozías, que estaban al servicio de este, y los mató.
9 Luego buscó a Ocozías, el cual se había escondido en Samaria, y cuando lo hallaron, lo llevaron ante Jehú y lo mataron. Pero le dieron sepultura, porque dijeron: «Era hijo de Josafat, quien de todo corazón buscó al Señor.» Y la casa de Ocozías no tenía el poder suficiente para retener el reino.
Atalía usurpa el trono
(2 R 11.1-21)10 Al ver Atalía, la madre de Ocozías, que su hijo había sido muerto, se dispuso a exterminar a toda la descendencia real de la casa de Judá.
11 Pero al ver Josabet, la hija del rey, que mataban a los demás hijos del rey, tomó a Joás hijo de Ocozías y lo escondió, y a él y a su nodriza los resguardó en uno de los aposentos. Fue así como Josabet, hija del rey Jorán y mujer del sacerdote Joyadá (pues ella era hermana de Ocozías), escondió a Joás de Atalía, y no lo mataron.
12 Y Joás estuvo seis años en el templo de Dios, escondido con ellos. Mientras tanto, Atalía reinaba en el país.
