The Northern Tribes Revolt
(1 Kings 12.1-20)1 Rehoboam went to Shechem, where all the people of northern Israel had gathered to make him king. 2 When Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had gone to Egypt to escape from King Solomon, heard this news, he returned home. 3 The people of the northern tribes sent for him, and they all went together to Rehoboam and said to him, 4 “Your father placed heavy burdens on us. If you make these burdens lighter and make life easier for us, we will be your loyal subjects.”
5 Rehoboam replied, “Give me three days to consider the matter. Then come back.” So the people left.
6 King Rehoboam consulted the older men who had served as his father Solomon's advisers. “What answer do you advise me to give these people?” he asked.
7 They replied, “If you are kind to these people and try to please them by giving a considerate answer, they will always serve you loyally.”
8 But he ignored the advice of the older men and went instead to the young men who had grown up with him and who were now his advisers. 9 “What do you advise me to do?” he asked. “What shall I say to the people who are asking me to make their burdens lighter?”
10 They replied, “This is what you should tell them: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father's waist.’ 11 Tell them, ‘My father placed heavy burdens on you; I will make them even heavier. He beat you with whips; I'll flog you with bullwhips!’”
12 Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to King Rehoboam, as he had instructed them. 13 The king ignored the advice of the older men and spoke harshly to the people, 14 as the younger men had advised. He said, “My father placed heavy burdens on you; I will make them even heavier. He beat you with whips; I'll flog you with bullwhips!” 15 It was the will of the Lord God to bring about what he had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through the prophet Ahijah from Shiloh. This is why the king did not pay any attention to the people.
16 When the people saw that the king would not listen to them, they shouted, “Down with David and his family! What have they ever done for us? People of Israel, let's go home! Let Rehoboam look out for himself!”
So the people of Israel rebelled, 17 leaving Rehoboam as king only of the people who lived in the territory of Judah.
18 Then King Rehoboam sent Adoniram, who was in charge of the forced labor, to go to the Israelites, but they stoned him to death. At this, Rehoboam hurriedly got in his chariot and escaped to Jerusalem. 19 Ever since that time the people of the northern kingdom of Israel have been in rebellion against the dynasty of David.
Rebelión de Israel
(1 R 12.1-24)1 Roboán fue a Siquén, porque en Siquén se había reunido todo Israel para hacerlo rey.
2 Jeroboán hijo de Nabat estaba en Egipto, adonde había huido a causa del rey Salomón, pero cuando supo esto volvió de Egipto,
3 pues mandaron a llamarlo. Al llegar Jeroboán, él y todos los israelitas hablaron con Roboán y le dijeron:
4 «Tu padre hizo muy pesado nuestro yugo. Aliviana un poco la dura servidumbre y el pesado yugo con que tu padre nos oprimió, y te serviremos.»
5 Pero él les dijo:
«Vengan a verme dentro de tres días.»
En cuanto el pueblo se fue,
6 el rey Roboán les pidió consejo a los ancianos que habían estado al servicio de Salomón, su padre, cuando este vivía. Les dijo:
«¿Qué me aconsejan ustedes responder a esta gente?»
7 Ellos le contestaron:
«Si te conduces bien con ellos, y eres de su agrado, y les hablas amablemente, ellos te servirán siempre.»
8 Pero Roboán no hizo caso del consejo de los ancianos, sino que les pidió consejo a los jóvenes que se habían criado con él y que estaban a su servicio.
9 Les dijo:
«¿Qué me aconsejan ustedes responder a esta gente? ¡Han venido a decirme: “Aliviana un poco el yugo con que tu padre nos oprimió”!»
10 Los jóvenes que se habían criado con él le contestaron:
«Pues a esa gente que ha venido a decirte: “Tu padre hizo muy pesado nuestro yugo, así que aliviana tú nuestra carga”, vas a decirle: “Mi dedo meñique es más grueso que los lomos de mi padre.
11 Y si mi padre hizo pesado su yugo, yo voy a hacerlo aún más pesado; si mi padre los castigó con azotes, ¡yo los voy a castigar con látigos!”»
12 Al tercer día Jeroboán y todo el pueblo fueron a ver al rey Roboán, puesto que él les había dicho que volvieran tres días después.
13 Pero el rey Roboán les respondió con aspereza, pues dejó de lado el consejo de los ancianos
14 y les habló siguiendo el consejo de los jóvenes. Les dijo: «Si mi padre les hizo pesado su yugo, yo lo voy a hacer más pesado; si mi padre los castigó con azotes, ¡yo los voy a castigar con látigos!»
15 Y el rey no le hizo caso al pueblo porque esto provenía de Dios, para que el Señor cumpliera lo que le había dicho a Jeroboán hijo de Nabat por medio de Ajías el silonita.
16 Al ver todos los israelitas que el rey no les había hecho caso, reaccionaron contra él y le dijeron:
«¿Qué tenemos nosotros que ver con David? ¡No tenemos nada que ver con el hijo de Yesé! ¡Vamos, israelitas, regresen a sus campamentos! ¡Y tú, David, ocúpate de tu casa!»
Fue así como todos los israelitas se fueron a sus tiendas.
17 Pero Roboán siguió reinando sobre los israelitas que habitaban en las ciudades de Judá.
18 Luego el rey Roboán envió a Hadorán, que estaba a cargo de los tributos, pero los israelitas lo apedrearon, y así murió. Entonces el rey Roboán subió en su carro y a toda prisa huyó a Jerusalén.
19 Fue así como los israelitas se apartaron de la casa de David, hasta el día de hoy.
