Naboth's Vineyard
1 Near King Ahab's palace in Jezreel there was a vineyard owned by a man named Naboth. 2 One day Ahab said to Naboth, “Let me have your vineyard; it is close to my palace, and I want to use the land for a vegetable garden. I will give you a better vineyard for it or, if you prefer, I will pay you a fair price.”
3 “I inherited this vineyard from my ancestors,” Naboth replied. “The Lord forbid that I should let you have it!”
4 Ahab went home, depressed and angry over what Naboth had said to him. He lay down on his bed, facing the wall, and would not eat. 5 His wife Jezebel went to him and asked, “Why are you so depressed? Why won't you eat?”
6 He answered, “Because of what Naboth said to me. I offered to buy his vineyard or, if he preferred, to give him another one for it, but he told me that I couldn't have it!”
7 “Well, are you the king or aren't you?” Jezebel replied. “Get out of bed, cheer up, and eat. I will get you Naboth's vineyard!”
8 Then she wrote some letters, signed Ahab's name to them, sealed them with his seal, and sent them to the officials and leading citizens of Jezreel. 9 The letters said: “Proclaim a day of fasting, call the people together, and give Naboth the place of honor. 10 Get a couple of scoundrels to accuse him to his face of cursing God and the king. Then take him out of the city and stone him to death.”
11 The officials and leading citizens of Jezreel did what Jezebel had commanded. 12 They proclaimed a day of fasting, called the people together, and gave Naboth the place of honor. 13 The two scoundrels publicly accused him of cursing God and the king, and so he was taken outside the city and stoned to death. 14 The message was sent to Jezebel: “Naboth has been put to death.”
15 As soon as Jezebel received the message, she said to Ahab, “Naboth is dead. Now go and take possession of the vineyard which he refused to sell to you.” 16 At once Ahab went to the vineyard to take possession of it.
17 Then the Lord said to Elijah, the prophet from Tishbe, 18 “Go to King Ahab of Samaria. You will find him in Naboth's vineyard, about to take possession of it. 19 Tell him that I, the Lord, say to him, ‘After murdering the man, are you taking over his property as well?’ Tell him that this is what I say: ‘In the very place that the dogs licked up Naboth's blood they will lick up your blood!’”
20 When Ahab saw Elijah, he said, “Have you caught up with me, my enemy?”
“Yes, I have,” Elijah answered. “You have devoted yourself completely to doing what is wrong in the Lord's sight. 21 So the Lord says to you, ‘I will bring disaster on you. I will do away with you and get rid of every male in your family, young and old alike. 22 Your family will become like the family of King Jeroboam son of Nebat and like the family of King Baasha son of Ahijah, because you have stirred up my anger by leading Israel into sin.’ 23 And concerning Jezebel, the Lord says that dogs will eat her body in the city of Jezreel. 24 Any of your relatives who die in the city will be eaten by dogs, and any who die in the open country will be eaten by vultures.”
( 25 There was no one else who had devoted himself so completely to doing wrong in the Lord's sight as Ahab—all at the urging of his wife Jezebel. 26 He committed the most shameful sins by worshiping idols, as the Amorites had done, whom the Lord had driven out of the land as the people of Israel advanced.)
27 When Elijah finished speaking, Ahab tore his clothes, took them off, and put on sackcloth. He refused food, slept in the sackcloth, and went about gloomy and depressed.
28 The Lord said to the prophet Elijah, 29 “Have you noticed how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Since he has done this, I will not bring disaster on him during his lifetime; it will be during his son's lifetime that I will bring disaster on Ahab's family.”
Ajab y la viña de Nabot
1 Después de estos sucesos, resultó que un hombre llamado Nabot de Jezrel tenía una viña en Samaria, junto al palacio del rey Ajab.
2 Y Ajab habló con Nabot y le dijo:
«Tu viña está cerca de mi palacio. Dámela, a cambio de otra mejor. Quiero plantar allí un huerto de legumbres. Si lo prefieres, te pagaré con dinero lo que valga.»
3 Pero Nabot le respondió:
«¡Que el Señor me libre de hacer eso! ¡Yo no puedo vender la herencia de mis padres!»
4 Ajab regresó a su palacio triste y decepcionado porque Nabot le dijo que no podía vender la herencia de sus padres. Y se fue a la cama sin comer y sin querer ver a nadie.
5 Entonces Jezabel, su mujer, entró en su alcoba y, al verlo triste, le preguntó:
«¿Por qué estás tan desanimado? ¿Por qué no comes?»
6 Y Ajab le respondió:
«Fui a ver a Nabot de Jezrel, y le pedí que me diera su viña a cambio de otra mejor; o que, si quería dinero, yo se lo pagaría. ¡Pero me dijo que no me daría su viña!»
7 Entonces Jezabel le preguntó:
«¿Y acaso no eres tú el rey de Israel? ¡Vamos, come y emborráchate! Yo me comprometo a darte la viña de Nabot.»
8 Enseguida, Jezabel escribió cartas a nombre de Ajab, las selló con su anillo, y las envió a los ancianos y a los jefes que vivían en la ciudad de Nabot.
9 Las cartas decían:
«Que se proclame ayuno, y que Nabot comparezca ante el pueblo.
10 Que sean presentados como testigos dos sinvergüenzas, que acusen a Nabot de haber blasfemado contra el Señor y contra el rey. Que sea arrojado a la calle y apedreado hasta que muera.»11 Y los ancianos, los jefes y el pueblo que allí vivía cumplieron las órdenes de Jezabel, tal y como las había puesto por escrito.
12 El ayuno se promulgó, y se hizo comparecer a Nabot ante el pueblo.
13 Luego llegaron los dos sinvergüenzas y, sentándose frente a Nabot, dijeron:
«Nabot ha blasfemado contra el Señor y contra el rey.»
Dicho esto, lo llevaron fuera de la ciudad, y allí lo apedrearon hasta matarlo.
14 Luego enviaron un mensajero a Jezabel, para que le informara que Nabot había sido apedreado y estaba muerto.
15 Y en cuanto Jezabel lo supo, fue a decirle a Ajab:
«Ve a tomar posesión de la viña que Nabot de Jezrel no te quiso vender. Nabot acaba de morir.»
16 Al enterarse Ajab que Nabot de Jezrel había muerto, fue a la viña y tomó posesión de ella.
17 Pero la palabra del Señor vino a Elías el tisbita, y le dijo:
18 «Ve ahora mismo a Samaria, y busca al rey Ajab. Está en la viña de Nabot, pues ha ido a tomar posesión de ella.
19 Y vas a decirle lo siguiente: “Así ha dicho el Señor: ‘¿No es verdad que asesinaste a Nabot para quitarle lo que era suyo?’ Pues así ha dicho el Señor: ‘En el mismo lugar donde los perros lamieron la sangre de Nabot, lamerán también tu propia sangre.’”»
20 Pero Ajab le replicó a Elías:
«¡Al fin me has encontrado, enemigo mío!»
Y Elías respondió:
«Te he encontrado porque te has hecho esclavo de la maldad, en la presencia misma del Señor.
21 Pero el Señor te dice: “Voy a castigarte. Voy a barrer hasta el último varón de tu palacio, sea libre o esclavo, como si fueran polvo.
22 Lo mismo que hice con la familia de Jeroboán hijo de Nabat, y con Basá hijo de Ajías, lo voy a hacer con tus descendientes, porque te has rebelado contra mí y has hecho pecar a mi pueblo, para provocar mi enojo.
23 En cuanto a Jezabel, tu mujer, yo, el Señor, declaro que los perros se la comerán en la muralla de Jezrel.
24 A cualquier descendiente tuyo que muera en la ciudad, se lo comerán los perros; y al que muera en el campo, se lo comerán las aves de rapiña.”»
25 (En realidad, ningún otro rey fue como Ajab. Incitado por Jezabel, su mujer, se entregó a hacer lo malo a los ojos del Señor.
26 Fue un rey despreciable, pues se fue en pos de los ídolos, a la manera de los amorreos, pueblo al que el Señor desterró de entre los israelitas.)
27 Después de que Ajab escuchó a Elías, se rasgó sus vestiduras reales, se vistió de cilicio, y ayunó; luego se acostó sobre cenizas, y allí durmió y anduvo humillado ante el Señor.
28 Entonces la palabra del Señor vino a Elías el tisbita, y le dijo:
29 «¿Ya viste cómo Ajab se ha humillado ante mí? Solo por eso, y mientras viva, no le enviaré la desgracia que le había anunciado. Pero su hijo y sus descendientes sí la padecerán.»
