Sentencia del Señor contra Babilonia
1 Así ha dicho el Señor:
«Voy a lanzar un viento destructor contra Babilonia y contra sus habitantes, porque se han rebelado contra mí.
2 Y enviaré contra Babilonia gente que la aventará por los aires y dejará vacía su tierra. Cuando llegue el día de la calamidad, la atacarán por todos los flancos.
3 No tendrán tiempo sus arqueros de extender sus arcos, ni de engalanarse con su coraza. Tampoco se salvarán sus jóvenes guerreros. ¡Todo su ejército será derrotado!
4 En la tierra de los caldeos caerán muertos por las calles, atravesados por las lanzas.
5 Aunque Israel y Judá han llenado su tierra de pecado contra mí, que soy su esposo y Dios; contra mí, que soy el Santo de Israel y Señor de los ejércitos, todavía no se han quedado en el abandono.»
6 ¡Salgan de Babilonia! ¡Pónganse a salvo, para que no perezcan por causa de su maldad! ¡Ha llegado la hora de la venganza del Señor, y él le dará su merecido!
7 En las manos del Señor, Babilonia fue una copa de oro que embriagó a toda la tierra; los pueblos bebieron de ella y quedaron aturdidos.
8 En un momento cayó Babilonia, y se hizo pedazos. Lloren por ella, y suavicen con bálsamos su dolor. Tal vez sane.
9 Curamos a Babilonia, y no ha sanado; dejémosla, y volvamos a nuestra tierra, porque su sentencia ha llegado hasta el cielo, ¡se ha elevado hasta las nubes!
10 El Señor sacó a la luz nuestra justicia; ¡vengan, vayamos a proclamar en Sión la obra del Señor, nuestro Dios!
11 ¡Limpien las saetas, y tomen los escudos! El Señor ha despertado el espíritu de los reyes de Media, y estos solo piensan en destruir a Babilonia. Así es como el Señor se vengará de quienes destruyeron su templo.
12 ¡Agiten la bandera sobre los muros de Babilonia! ¡Refuercen la guardia, y pongan centinelas! ¡Preparen las emboscadas! ¡El Señor ha decidido llevar a cabo sus planes en contra de los habitantes de Babilonia!
13 Tú, que pusiste tu trono entre los caudalosos ríos; tú, que posees grandes tesoros: Tu fin ha llegado; ¡llegaste al final de tu carrera!
14 El Señor de los ejércitos ha jurado por sí mismo: «¡Yo lanzaré contra ti tanta gente, que parecerán una plaga de langostas! ¡Contra ti lanzarán sus gritos de victoria!»
15 Con su poder, el Señor hizo la tierra;
con su sabiduría afirmó el mundo,
con su inteligencia extendió los cielos.
16 Él habla, y en los cielos
las aguas se agitan tumultuosas;
él hace que las nubes se levanten
desde lo más recóndito de la tierra;
en medio de relámpagos envía la lluvia,
y hace que el viento salga de sus depósitos.
17 Todo el mundo es engreído e ignorante;
todo artífice se avergüenza de sus esculturas,
¡sus ídolos son una mentira carente de espíritu!
18 Son una ilusión; obras dignas de burla;
¡cuando llegue el momento, perecerán!
19 Todo lo contrario es el Dios de Jacob,
el dueño de la tribu de Israel.
¡Él es quien ha dado forma a todo!
¡Su nombre es el Señor de los ejércitos!
20 «Tú eres para mí un instrumento de guerra.
Por medio de ti despedazaré a las naciones;
por medio de ti destruiré a los reinos.
21 Por medio de ti despedazaré
a los caballos y a sus jinetes,
a los carros de guerra y a los aurigas.
22 Por medio de ti despedazaré
a hombres y mujeres, a niños y ancianos,
a jóvenes y doncellas.
23 Por medio de ti despedazaré
a los pastores y a sus rebaños,
a los labradores y a sus yuntas,
a los jefes y a los príncipes.
24 »Yo les daré su merecido a Babilonia y a todos los habitantes de Caldea por todo el daño que hicieron en Sión, y que ustedes mismos presenciaron.
—Palabra del Señor.25 »Yo estoy contra ti, monte destructor, porque destruiste toda la tierra. Voy a extender mi mano contra ti, para hacerte rodar por las peñas; ¡para reducirte a monte quemado!
—Palabra del Señor.26 »Nadie tomará una sola piedra tuya para ponerla como piedra angular, ni como cimiento. ¡Para siempre quedarás hecha un desierto!»
—Palabra del Señor.27 ¡Levanten la bandera en el país!
¡Toquen la trompeta en las naciones!
¡Preparen a los pueblos para atacarla!
¡Junten contra ella a los reinos de Ararat,
y a los de Mini y de Askenaz!
¡Designen a un capitán que ordene atacarla!
¡Que ataquen los caballos como langostas!
28 ¡Preparen contra ella a las naciones,
a los reyes de Media, y a sus jefes y príncipes,
y a todos los territorios bajo su dominio!
29 La tierra tiembla y se aflige,
porque los planes del Señor se han confirmado
para convertir a Babilonia en un desierto,
¡en un país completamente deshabitado!
30 Los guerreros babilonios han dejado de pelear
porque ya no tienen fuerzas para hacerlo;
como mujeres, se encerraron en sus baluartes,
pues los cerrojos de la ciudad fueron rotos
y sus casas fueron incendiadas.
31 Unos tras otros, los mensajeros
anuncian al rey de Babilonia la caída de la ciudad.
32 Los vados han sido tomados,
los baluartes han sido incendiados,
y el pánico domina a los guerreros.
33 Así ha dicho el Señor de los ejércitos,
así ha dicho el Dios de Israel:
«La bella Babilonia es como un campo de trigo;
el tiempo de la cosecha se acerca,
y se prepara ya el lugar para trillarla.»
34 Y Jerusalén, la que habita en Sión, dice:
«El rey Nabucodonosor de Babilonia me devoró;
me desmenuzó y me dejó como un vaso vacío;
se llenó el vientre con lo mejor que yo tenía,
y como un dragón, me devoró y me echó fuera.
35 Por eso pido que mi sangre
recaiga sobre Babilonia y sobre todos los caldeos
por la violencia de que me hicieron víctima.»
36 Por eso ha dicho el Señor:
«Yo juzgaré tu causa y te vengaré.
¡Voy a dejar secos su mar y sus ríos!
37 Y Babilonia será un montón de ruinas,
un motivo de espanto y de burlas,
una ciudad deshabitada, ¡una guarida de chacales!
38 »Todos ellos rugirán al mismo tiempo,
como leones, como cachorros de león.
39 Cuando más excitados se encuentren,
yo les daré un banquete y los embriagaré;
una vez alegres, los haré caer en un sueño
del que nunca más despertarán.
—Palabra del Señor.40 »Yo haré que los traigan al matadero
como si fueran corderos, carneros y machos cabríos.»
41 ¡Babilonia, la ciudad alabada en toda la tierra,
ha caído en poder de sus enemigos,
y es ahora motivo de horror entre las naciones!
42 ¡Las olas del mar cayeron sobre Babilonia,
y la cubrieron por completo!
43 Sus ciudades fueron asoladas;
la tierra quedó seca y desierta,
tierra por la que nadie pasará,
y en la que ningún ser humano vivirá.
44 «Yo juzgaré a Bel en Babilonia,
y le sacaré de la boca lo que se tragó.
Ninguna nación volverá a adorarlo,
y la muralla de Babilonia se vendrá abajo.
45 »Ustedes, pueblo mío, ¡salgan de allí!
¡Pónganse a salvo del ardor de mi ira!
46 No se desanimen, ni tengan miedo
por los rumores que oirán por la tierra.
Año tras año habrá rumores de violencia
y de un tirano que se levanta contra otro.
47 »Por lo tanto, ya viene el día
en que yo destruiré a los ídolos de Babilonia.
Todo su país quedará avergonzado,
y todos sus muertos caerán en medio de ella.
48 Los cielos y la tierra, y todo lo que existe,
cantarán de gozo por la caída de Babilonia.
¡Del norte vendrán sus destructores!»
—Palabra del Señor.49 Babilonia caerá por los muertos de Israel,
del mismo modo que, por Babilonia,
cayeron los muertos de toda la tierra.
50 Ustedes, los que escaparon de la espada,
pónganse en marcha, no se detengan.
Acuérdense del Señor en tierras lejanas,
y no se olviden de Jerusalén.
51 Nos hemos enterado de la afrenta,
y nos sentimos muy avergonzados.
No sabemos dónde esconder la cara,
porque gente extranjera ha venido
contra los santuarios de la casa del Señor.
52 «Por lo tanto, viene el día en que yo destruiré sus ídolos, y en todo su país gemirán los heridos.
—Palabra del Señor.53 »Aun si Babilonia subiera hasta el cielo, y en las alturas se hiciera fuerte, no podría escapar de la destrucción que yo le enviaré.»
—Palabra del Señor.54 ¡Se oye el clamor de Babilonia, y la gran destrucción de la tierra de los caldeos!
55 El Señor destruirá a Babilonia, y le quitará su mucha jactancia. El bramido de sus olas se oirá como el sonido de aguas tumultuosas,
56 porque ha llegado la destrucción contra Babilonia, y sus valientes han sido apresados; su arco fue hecho pedazos, porque el Señor es el Dios de la venganza, y le dará su merecido.
57 «Yo embriagaré a sus príncipes y a sus sabios, a sus capitanes y nobles, y a sus hombres fuertes. Y caerán en un sueño eterno, del que no despertarán.»
—Palabra del Rey, cuyo nombre es el Señor de los ejércitos.58 Así ha dicho el Señor de los ejércitos:
«La ancha muralla de Babilonia será derribada por completo, y sus altas puertas serán consumidas por el fuego. En vano se fatigaron los pueblos y las naciones, pues su trabajo acabó siendo consumido por el fuego.»
59 En el cuarto año del reinado de Sedequías en Judá, el profeta Jeremías envió un mensaje a Seraías hijo de Nerías, hijo de Maseías, cuando este iba acompañando a Sedequías al destierro de Babilonia, pues era su principal camarero.
60 Jeremías escribió en un rollo de cuero todo el mal que estaba por sobrevenirle a Babilonia. Todas las palabras contra Babilonia quedaron escritas.
61 Jeremías le dijo a Seraías:
«Cuando llegues a Babilonia, y veas y leas todo esto,
62 dirás: “Señor, tú has dicho que vas a destruir este lugar, y que para siempre será asolado, hasta que no quede en él un solo hombre ni un solo animal con vida.”
63 Y cuando acabes de leer este rollo, le atarás una piedra y lo arrojarás al río Éufrates.
64 Luego dirás: “Así se hundirá Babilonia, y no volverá a levantarse del mal que yo voy a traer sobre ella.”»

Further Judgment on Babylonia
1 The Lord says, “I am bringing a destructive wind against Babylonia and its people. 2 I will send foreigners to destroy Babylonia like a wind that blows straw away. When that day of destruction comes, they will attack from every side and leave the land bare. 3 Don't give its soldiers time to shoot their arrows or to put on their armor. Do not spare the young men! Destroy the whole army! 4 They will be wounded and die in the streets of their cities. 5 I, the Lord God Almighty, have not abandoned Israel and Judah, even though they have sinned against me, the Holy One of Israel. 6 Run away from Babylonia! Run for your lives! Do not be killed because of Babylonia's sin. I am now taking my revenge and punishing it as it deserves. 7 Babylonia was like a gold cup in my hand, making the whole world drunk. The nations drank its wine and went out of their minds. 8 Babylonia has suddenly fallen and is destroyed! Mourn over it! Get medicine for its wounds, and maybe it can be healed. 9 Foreigners living there said, ‘We tried to help Babylonia, but it was too late. Let's leave now and go back home. God has punished Babylonia with all his might and has destroyed it completely.’”
10 The Lord says, “My people shout, ‘The Lord has shown that we are in the right. Let's go and tell the people in Jerusalem what the Lord our God has done.’”
11 The Lord has stirred up the kings of Media, because he intends to destroy Babylonia. That is how he will take revenge for the destruction of his Temple.
The attacking officers command, “Sharpen your arrows! Get your shields ready! 12 Give the signal to attack Babylon's walls. Strengthen the guard! Post the sentries! Place troops in ambush!”
The Lord has done what he said he would do to the people of Babylonia. 13 That country has many rivers and rich treasures, but its time is up, and its thread of life is cut. 14 The Lord Almighty has sworn by his own life that he will bring many men to attack Babylonia like a swarm of locusts, and they will shout with victory.
A Hymn of Praise to God
15 The Lord made the earth by his power;
by his wisdom he created the world
and stretched out the heavens.
16 At his command the waters above the sky roar;
he brings clouds from the ends of the earth.
He makes lightning flash in the rain
and sends the wind from his storeroom.
17 At the sight of this, people feel stupid and senseless;
those who make idols are disillusioned
because the gods they make are false and lifeless.
18 They are worthless and should be despised;
they will be destroyed when the Lord comes to deal with them.
19 The God of Jacob is not like them;
he is the one who made everything,
and he has chosen Israel to be his very own people.
The Lord Almighty is his name.
The Lord's Hammer
20 The Lord says,
“Babylonia, you are my hammer, my weapon of war.
I used you to crush nations and kingdoms,
21 to shatter horses and riders,
to shatter chariots and their drivers,
22 to kill men and women,
to slay old and young,
to kill boys and girls,
23 to slaughter shepherds and their flocks,
to slaughter farmers and their plow horses,
to crush rulers and high officials.”
Babylonia's Punishment
24 The Lord says, “You will see me repay Babylonia and its people for all the evil they did to Jerusalem. 25 Babylonia, you are like a mountain that destroys the whole world, but I, the Lord, am your enemy. I will take hold of you, level you to the ground, and leave you in ashes. 26 None of the stones from your ruins will ever be used again for building. You will be like a desert forever. I, the Lord, have spoken.
27 “Give the signal to attack! Blow the trumpet so that the nations can hear! Prepare the nations for war against Babylonia! Tell the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz to attack. Appoint an officer to lead the attack. Bring up the horses like a swarm of locusts. 28 Prepare the nations for war against Babylonia. Send for the kings of Media, their leaders and officials, and the armies of all the countries they control. 29 The earth trembles and shakes because the Lord is carrying out his plan to make Babylonia a desert, where no one lives. 30 The Babylonian soldiers have stopped fighting and remain in their forts. They have lost their courage and have become helpless. The city gates are broken down, and the houses are on fire. 31 Messenger after messenger runs to tell the king of Babylonia that his city has been broken into from every side. 32 The enemy have captured the river crossing and have set the fortresses on fire. The Babylonian soldiers have panicked. 33 Soon the enemy will cut them down and trample them like grain on a threshing place. I, the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, have spoken.”
34 The king of Babylonia cut Jerusalem up
and ate it.
He emptied the city like a jar;
like a monster he swallowed it.
He took what he wanted
and threw the rest away.
35 Let the people of Zion say,
“May Babylonia be held responsible
for the violence done to us!”
Let the people of Jerusalem say,
“May Babylonia be held responsible
for what we have suffered!”
The Lord Will Help Israel
36 And so the Lord said to the people of Jerusalem, “I will take up your cause and will make your enemies pay for what they did to you. I will dry up the source of Babylonia's water and make its rivers go dry. 37 That country will become a pile of ruins where wild animals live. It will be a horrible sight; no one will live there, and all who see it will be terrified. 38 The Babylonians all roar like lions and growl like lion cubs. 39 Are they greedy? I will prepare them a feast and make them drunk and happy. They will go to sleep and never wake up. 40 I will take them to be slaughtered, like lambs, goats, and rams. I, the Lord, have spoken.”
Babylon's Fate
41 The Lord says about Babylon: “The city that the whole world praised has been captured! What a horrifying sight Babylon has become to the nations! 42 The sea has rolled over Babylon and covered it with roaring waves. 43 The towns have become a horrifying sight and are like a waterless desert, where no one lives or even travels. 44 I will punish Bel, the god of Babylonia, and make him give up his stolen goods; the nations will not worship him any more.
“Babylon's walls have fallen. 45 People of Israel, run away from there! Run for your life from my fierce anger. 46 Do not lose courage or be afraid because of the rumors you hear. Every year a different rumor spreads—rumors of violence in the land and of one king fighting another. 47 And so the time is coming when I will deal with Babylonia's idols. The whole country will be put to shame, and all its people will be killed. 48 Everything on earth and in the sky will shout for joy when Babylonia falls to the people who come from the north to destroy it. 49 Babylonia caused the death of people all over the world, and now Babylonia will fall because it caused the death of so many Israelites. I, the Lord, have spoken.”
God's Message to the Israelites in Babylonia
50 The Lord says to his people in Babylonia: “You have escaped death! Now go! Don't wait! Though you are far from home, think about me, your Lord, and remember Jerusalem. 51 You say, ‘We've been disgraced and made ashamed; we feel completely helpless because foreigners have taken over the holy places in the Temple.’ 52 So then, I say that the time is coming when I will deal with Babylon's idols, and the wounded will groan throughout the country. 53 Even if Babylon could climb to the sky and build a strong fortress there, I would still send people to destroy it. I, the Lord, have spoken.”
Further Destruction on Babylon
54 The Lord says,
“Listen to the sound of crying in Babylon,
of mourning for the destruction in the land.
55 I am destroying Babylon
and putting it to silence.
The armies rush in like roaring waves
and attack with noisy shouts.
56 They have come to destroy Babylon;
its soldiers are captured,
and their bows are broken.
I am a God who punishes evil,
and I will treat Babylon as it deserves.
57 I will make its rulers drunk—
men of wisdom, leaders, and soldiers.
They will go to sleep and never wake up.
I, the king, have spoken;
I am the Lord Almighty.
58 The walls of mighty Babylon will be thrown to the ground,
and its towering gates burned down.
The work of the nations is all for nothing;
their efforts go up in flames.
I, the Lord Almighty, have spoken.”
Jeremiah's Message Is Sent to Babylonia
59 King Zedekiah's personal attendant was Seraiah, the son of Neriah and grandson of Mahseiah. In the fourth year that Zedekiah was king of Judah, Seraiah was going to Babylonia with him, and I gave him some instructions. 60 I wrote in a book an account of all the destruction that would come on Babylonia, as well as all these other things about Babylonia. 61 I told Seraiah, “When you get to Babylon, be sure to read aloud to the people everything that is written here. 62 Then pray, ‘Lord, you have said that you would destroy this place, so that there would be no living creatures in it, neither people nor animals, and it would be like a desert forever.’ 63 Seraiah, when you finish reading this book to the people, then tie it to a rock and throw it into the Euphrates River 64 and say, ‘This is what will happen to Babylonia—it will sink and never rise again because of the destruction that the Lord is going to bring on it.’”
